Told to cut out cheese and saturated fat and stick to vegetable based products.

Sheila have you read Trick and Treat by Barry Groves? (Or any of the other cholesterol deception books.) From the chapter 'The dangers of low blood cholesterol', I quote....

After all that you have heard about cholesterol, you may be surprised to learn that as you age, your chances of an early death rise if your total cholesterol falls. [A study over 20 years ago] showed clearly that after the age of 50, heart disease rates increased by 14% for every 0.026 mmol/l drop in total cholesterol levels.

He concludes......'It is quite obvious that, while there might (or might not) not be an increased risk of a heart attack in a man, if he is in his 40's and if his cholesterol level is very high, for men older than this, and for women of any age, a cholesterol level over 7.0mmol/l looks healthiest'.

There is plenty of evidence that for women over 50, a higher cholesterol level PROTECTS against many diseases. He also explains how the 'healthy' cholesterol levels came about - its laughable.

    Might be worth a read???

Sheila54, don't be disheartened by your results (((sheila54))). Firstly, if you've been losing weight then that liberates cholesterol into your blood.

Secondly, to save dosh some practices order Total Cholesterol tests which don't break it into HDL (good) and LDL(bad) and they don't order triglycerides (trigs) unless total cholesterol is high. Nor do they routinely test whether a person has Pattern A (good) or pattern B (bad) LDL.

Your GP did at least order a break down of your cholesterol. There is a test that shows whether you have pattern A or pattern B LDL but it might be expensive so you might not get it unless your results deteriorate and they are going to improve.

Dr Robert Lustig was asked in Q&A after one of his YouTube videos about cholesterol and he said you can't look at cholesterol in isolation, you have to look at it with trigs. He said what doctors want to see is more HDL than LDL, low trigs and that the LDL is mostly Pattern A, the fluffy stuff.

Having said all of that.. women have higher levels of cholesterol cos we have more fat naturally, than men. Most of the research is skewed towards men, murphydog999 is spot on.

Then there's that dratted man Ancel Keys who eventually admitted that there's no connection between dietary cholesterol and heart disease. Much of his research is discredited now, although governments don't seem to have grasped it yet !! (understatement).

If it were me, I'd think sorting the thyroid problem woud be more helpful than giving up cheese therefore xx

Thanks everyone for your support :T

What I would like to know is how much fat, including saturated, you have? I seem to have around 130g total with between 35 and 50g saturated fat usually. Is this too much on a low carb diet? My GP wanted me to cut out milk (changing to soya), cheese, cream, coconut oil and to eat more lentils, chick peas etc. but I told her that soy milk makes my stomach bad. Don't much like chick peas either, being a bit of a carnivore. Most days I have 2 eggs, 1 -2 oz cheese, 2- 3 oz cream and 8oz lactofree milk, concentrating on fish, poultry and a occasional meat, mince, sausages, bacon. I also have around 2 oz nuts or seeds a day as well. Sounds healthy to me but maybe not? Avocados have healthy fat and I have half a day as well.

I really feel so much better now that I am eating 40 - 50 carbs and think that maybe 20 is too low to keep up for me. I take my hat off to those of you who can but I did that last year and want this to be sustainable.

Enough about me, how are the rest of you doing? mazzers - was work any better today, sistercas and bossymoo - have you been good?

daska - not easy giving up treats but worth it in the short term if it helps. Good luck!

Raining outside, again. I am going on holiday to Italy two weeks on Saturday and looking forward to it as some Vit D will be welcome :)
Family coming as it is half term and we will fly the flag + bunting on our mobile home. The Queen is coming to Bromley tomorrow, near where I live, and the kids are excited!!!

Hello, yes I am being good. Been to nurse and she very happy I have lost my holiday weight. Today I have had:
    Harrogate sausages
    Moussaka
    Choc oatbran loaf and yoghurt
Lots of tea as I couldn't get warm, just lugged the vac upstairs and did every room including with the tools in the edges and corners, so feel very warm now lol

Have some gammon for tea. And the rest of my oatbran loaf. Drank lots of water and only 1 diet cola.

Bought some more seeds earlier, aubergine, lettuce and cauli. Will sow these with the tots later in the week...

    Happy lc'ing all

I have to question the logic of some professionals when you are recommended to add one of the worst products on the planet and cut-out one of the best.

Soya - genetically modified, processed, and full of phytoestrogens which do nothing for regulating hormone levels and promote stomach fat.

Coconut oil - one of the healthiest fats/foods on the planet, full of nutrition and goodness with LOADS of health-giving properties.

    Unbelievable!

(((sheila54))) bottom line, it doesn't matter how much fat any of us eat or even how many carbs, because we are all different and we have to choose what suits us and our body best and you should do the same for yourself.

Your doctor believes in the low fat mantra. She looks at your cholesterol and it worries her and as she wants to help you she gives you what she thinks is good advice. You have the choice whether to believe her and follow her advice or do your own research and go your own way.

Having been reared on the whole low fat thing, brought up to believe that eggs were more or less gonna kill me instantly if I had them fried more than once a year, I DO understand how people can have real concerns about ditching carbs and upping fats. It's perfectly valid and reasonable to have concerns. That's why all of us should read up and reassure ourselves that low carbing is right for us.

To low carb successfully we have to be convinced.

I'm not a doctor and I don't know how diet affects the thyroid. But if she's concentrating on the cholesterol first, surely that's less important ?
