Have just made the Dukan chocolate cake - don't bother it has no taste :(

Still trying to find a decent chocolate brownie/cake recipe that tastes ok and doesn't have flax. Really difficult when my daughter bakes such lovely cakes and I can't have them. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not a big cake fan, but could you substitute soy flour and banking powder for flour and splendor for sugar in this (just stolen from Taplady on MSE in another thread):

    185g dark chocolate
    185g butter
    3 eggs
    250g castor sugar
    115g plain flour
(you can add nuts such as walnuts if you like)

melt the chocolate and butter together in a pan over a low heat
beat the eggs and sugar in a bowl until frothy
add the melted chocolate and butter
    stir in the flour
pour mixture into a lined tin

bake at 180C for 20 - 25 mins depending on how squishy you like them.
    its a very tasty recipe.

I have to confess I haven't tried it ..... if you do let us know what it's like

Thanks Minihauk. I can't have soy products either due to possible low thyroid but wonder if it would work with coconut flour or ground almonds? Lot of sugar in that!!

I was looking at one on ticklemysweettooth last night which uses almond flour. Not tried it but I am feeling tempted ;) And ditch the wheat looks interesting - though unfortunately her brownie recipe uses flax.

Sheila I do manage to sleep ok. When we were first told the prognosis i didn't sleep, was trawling the net every night for clinical trials etc. but since it happened, I've just been so tired, that I collapse into bed most nights. I'm lucky with the tots too, they are pretty reliable sleepers although DS gets in with me at some point during the night. He just says "shove up mummy" lol.

Edwardia, good news today, glad it went well.

Baking, I have made some lovely loaves with ground almonds, but yet to find a chocolate / cocoa one that works well. I also add whey or soy protein powder, and yoghurt. Maybe you could try a chocolates flavoured protein powder?

I had quite an early tea again, mixed grill. Was yum. Saved some spare ribs that I've just had for supper. Did them in a roasting bag with soy sauce and Chinese 5 spice. Very nice.

    Minihauk - thank you :)

Sheila54.. I just proved that low carb lowered my blood glucose, got rid of my anaemia and impaired kidney function - also that I have excellent cholesterol and no vitamin deficiencies.

I'm very lucky that my doc is so open-minded and maybe you're a tad unlucky that yours isn't. My GP may be open-minded but I've certainly come across closed minds from consultants, junior doctors, nurses and practice nurses.

You're at an advantage because you're a former nurse so you speak their lingo. I'm sure we can all find links to proper studies so that you can either give your GP the links or print off the study summaries. That way at least she won't think you're doing something flaky and are backing up your argument with solid facts.

If you're not convinced re: fats then you won't convince your doc either. Have you watched the saturated fat is good for YouTube video ? The speaker is a cardiac surgeon and professor of surgery. He starts his day with coconut oil :)

    Heels Sheila
Not been able to wear them for years!

I wear flat leather pumps, Clarks freckle face are the comfiest i've found but being on my feet rushing about for nine hours takes its toll on the underneath of my heels :(

No wonder i just want to sit about on my days off!

I've tried all sorts of gel/rubber/leather insoles too.

Good work Edwardia, i must say your comments do reinforce my thoughts on lc, so keep it up, i'm going back to it after the bank hol. Having a few beers with friends first as i've not been out/had a drink for months.

Out of curiosity, I've just had a peer into the baby belly thread where wraps were suggested as a bread substitute.

I suspect it is a little hard core for that thread but I've been making my own low carb version of wraps using iceberg lettuce leaves as the wrap. They work really well for holding the filling together.
