Thanks. But we are reviewing the resorts not the people. My family are very pleased to be labeled the "lowest of the low"

Went to Butlins at Minehead in November - stayed with friends who have got two caravans on the site (pm if you want contact details) Very good facilities and nice place. Easy to get to from the Midlands lovely surrounding areas. Lots to do both during the day on site and at night if you want or the town is only a short walk away. Apparently they also have a campsite if you want camping.

I've been to Bognor every year for the last 3 - I have 2 young children... they love it!

We're taking the kids there in May and then I'm taking my girlfriend to Barbados in July without the kids... so my point? Even if your a snob, remember who your going for - they really don't care.

However, if you like - there is a hotel now at Bognor which is very, very smart. It's more expensive obviously but for quality, it's miles above the chalets.

    Hope this helps

For our summer holiday which is 2 weeks we save hard and book a high standard hotel because we like to hang around the pool and beach and have only a few excursions out (because the little ones), so therefore we like to spend the money on a good hotel. We also take the kids to Butlins staying silver standard. To be honest the kids don't notice slightly shabby accommodation because they LOVE it. You can book some very good deals at Butlins (we have stayed both self catering and half board), in the knowledge that you will have a good time. The shows etc the kids love. Apparently the hotel is excellent, and in fact we are looking to book it for one of our wild work weekends away. (Naturally the 18 plus).

Book, relax and enjoy. don't go expecting 5 star accommodation but don't going looking for faults as well. Half the fun is laughing about some of the bad bits.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies!

Taken on board the comments about it being for the kids. There's no way I'd be going if it weren't for my little one, but whilst I was nearly considering not bothering, I will get a quote for the hotel at Bognor tommorow and see how much it is. Admittedly, it's being paid for by Tesco, so I can't really complain.

we have booked a week in minehead in a silver apartment this year, but I am panicking now after reading some of your posts!

we've never been able to afford a holiday & my son's 11 & we thought it would be a holiday that he would enjoy & remember, not something we would've picked for ourselves. It's been hard to save for even this type of holiday but now I'm wondering if its going to be worth it.

Please tell me its not that bad!
Moonbeam, it's not that bad, OK! A few years back I took 3 12 year old girls for a long weekend, in November, for the Five concerts there. It rained every day, but they loved it. The indoor pool, with slides and rapid run was their favourite place and they swam every day.
The restaurant food was fine and the staff there were great. Burger King etc. on site, Tescos, Kwiksave and Co-op in town. The rooms were clean and warm, a bit shabby, but I think they have been refurbished since then. Minehead town is right on your doorstep, with the beautiful Quantock Hills behind the bay. There is a steam railway running from the centre of the town, https://www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk/index.html. If you want a day out shopping, the nearest big town is Taunton. Lots of nice places to visit along the coast, including v quaint Dunster with it's castle. Your son might like the Tropiquaria Wildlife Park which specialises in reptiles and creepy-crawlies! https://www.tropiquaria.co.uk .
The only downside was the quality of the evening shows, not great, but the kids enjoyed them! The sheer number of overtired kids rampaging around and a LOT of alcohol being consumed by everyone else (bit rowdy). Not something I could face every night!
But I'm sure you'll have a great time and your son will love it :D

I wouldn't go near a Butlins ever again. It might be worth you staying near one and going just for the day.
We went to Skeggy, what a dump! Swimming pool was filthy (wouldn't let my dog swim in it) Stay away is my advice

I Thought dogs were not allowed at Butlins
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.
  • Hi
Been to Minehead & Bognor. Always found Bognor to be a lot cleaner. My teenage girls & 3yr old all prefer Minehead as there's more to do there.(bigger fair, bigger bob's yard etc) We always go half board, there's always plenty of choice. I would never go standard accomodation again it was really awful. We always go Silver- which we find is fine.
The kids will love it at Butlins no matter where you stay, mine always do.

Also theres one other thing I think you will find you have to pay full brochure price if using your clubcard deals so you may find if you book a last minute offer from there website there wont be much difference in price & you could use your clubcard vouchers for something else.
    Have a great time.

  • been to both minehead and Skeggie - must admit I was very wary as butlins is not my bag at all! DH was delighted though - very dodgy geezer!!! (ONLY JOKING!!!) Anyway kids adored it - they had a ball and are dying to go back. Much preferred minehead as it's bigger, more to do, found the staffa nd redcaots much friendlier and we had a much better time! the accommodation in Minehead was bad hough - we stayed in a gold sc apartment which was on the same scale as the silver sc apartment at Skeggie. Tescos is handy at Minehead tooa nd the beach is gorgeous and just across the road. Gold half board food looked good at Skeggie I have to say!

We did SC both times and preferred Minehead as Pizza hut was far better than papa Johns!! (Waited 30 mins to be served in a virtually empty restauarant!!)
Bob's yard in Skeggie is very small and hasn't got as much in it as Minehead.

    GO MINEHEAD!

Byt he way th evening entertainment can be hilarious - that's just watching some of the other 'punters' (including the man getting caught trying to sneak in beer in babies bottles! (Why would you?! Everyone else was opening snaffling from vodka bottles in pockets etc!)! We were lucky - our kids were exhausted and were back in bed by 8pm so we missed some of the more Butlinsy type shows!
