  • Just to let you know, I have recently had a similar experience with Equita regarding council tax.
I got behind with council tax of £247.18 and the account was passed to Equita. At this point when I rang the council they told me thay could no longer deal with me, and I had to deal with Equita. They were impossible to reason with, and sent their bailiff who put a letter through my door saying if I did not phone his number within 24 hours it would be taken as a refusal to pay.
I tried the number on the letter and the phone was switched off. Equita head office said the account was passed to the bailiff and they could no longer deal with it.
I then had a letter in the post to say the bailiff would attend this weekend with a removal contractor to remove my goods. He didn't.
Equita continued to tell me they could not deal with it and I had to ring the bailiff.
When I reached him this morning he told me he wanted £438.18.
I offered the original £247.18 plus £24.50 for his visit and he refused, stating that he would be back tomorrow morning.
This afternoon I went to the council offices and insisted on seeing someone who could deal with my account.
She called up the account on her computer, told me I owed £247.18, which I paid her. She declined the £24.50 bailiff fee, and told me that Equita would be informed that the debt was paid in full, and no further action would be taken!!!
I was assured that there were no further costs, and the bailiff would be instructed that the case was closed.

Ok, so the very latest is: My councillor has got the debt and this year's council tax on a repayment scheme, to start in May 2009. :j

To be fair to Equita, once they received the "stop" on my account, no further correspondence or bailiffs attended or letters sent.

I got a small rise in salary in April, so this went toward some of my outstanding debts. I instigated a token £1.00 repayment for most of my debtors, freeing up more money to pay off essential utility bills which were outstanding. :T

Sorry, Herbie, I never did receive your PM, but just wanted to again thank you and the others mentioned earlier on helping. I really could not have got through the last couple of weeks without it. :A:A:A:T:beer::kisses::heartsmil:T:j

I have just joined the site and wondered if you all would be able to advise, I have been an absolute idiot, and let my council tax mount up and I now owe £1350 according to Equita bailiffs.

I tried to contact the council but they refuse to talk to me, I have tried to ask equita for a monthly repayment of £50.00 per month, with a view to increasing, but they flatly refuse, and have now put a removal notice through my door, and say they will by force if necessary take my possessions to pay for the debt. They say a £150 charge will be added to the account!

I realise this is my own doing, but I am at my wits end, I am frightened to sleep, and sit in my own living area. Is there something that I can do to try and sort this mess out? Any advise would be extremely grateful.
