  • Ekkk, for some reason I am feeling vey excited, lol! I have been placing/researching adverts today, I just been on the phone to the local magazine, which goes through the door of all the people in my area regarding advertising (purely out of curiosity really), they offered me £175 for a quarter page advert per issue (they are out every 3 weeks) put I'd have to place the ad for 3 issues :S, I am terribly tempted but it would have to bring in a reasonable amount of work to cover costs, well maybe not actually, 3 students ordering 9 lessons each would cover it, ekkkkk, so tempting :S. What do you think of the price? Would it be worth it?

Also I have nearly clinched a (very small but every thing counts) proofreading job, it is just a one off for a university student but he is 99% sure he will use me apparently so I have my fingers tightly crossed.

Charlotte - ask the magazine if they will give you a better deal, never ever take the first price they offer you as there is always some flexibility.

Fingers crossed for the proof reading job too. What is it that you teach?

Today, has been fairly productive, I have typed the letter and packaged together a whole load of stuff for the council nincompoops and have even cheekily pointed out that they seem to be confused about self employment and directors of limited companies - so I have put them straight:rotfl: They seem to think that being a director is self employment when in reality a director is an employee of the firm, I have also set them straight on prepared and audited accounts too - I have even mentioned on the form that I am a member of the FSB:rotfl:

I shall contact the Institute with regard to my assignments - I need them to be marked, life is too short to hang around and them not being marked is slowing me down:rolleyes:

Hope you have a great day - despite the odd weather we're having today.

hello all! Welcome newbies! exciting to see more people joining in.

We don't advertise in mags so not sure about the quote charlotte but i'd say there's room for haggling that price down.

Lol TCM I might be able to squeeze you in my case! only get 1 day for exploring as it's meetings all day in different parts of the city!

Having a quieter day today thankfully. Going to take the dog to the beach for some air. Work can wait! Altho I need to call and yell at parcelfarse yet again. I do wonder how they manage to survive as they seem to be run by utter eeeejits! sorry, rant over.

    Have a good day all

    Hiya
Bit of a stressful day today and of course I'm feeling guilty, lol! As you know my clinic is based at home and this is the first holiday i've left my children, 10 and 8, watching a dvd whilst I do a client. They've been brilliant. Today my mum was going to have them as i'm working for 4 hours (with gaps inbetween) only she phoned me up as she felt ill. I was going to cancel work but my children have begged me to work so they can have a chill out day. So far they've had a picnic lunch whilst watching a dvd. Then, for my second client they went out in the garden and did agility training with our puppy (very funny to watch!!) I've got two more hours to do and they're want to go on the playstation and then for the last hour play games in their rooms. Am I being a terrible mother letting them do this??? Please be honest. This is the last day i'm working until they go back to school so please don't think I do it everyday.

    Ok, guilt trip over!

Right, i've got to go and watch a dog show in the garden until I start work at 2. This should be fun! xx
  • Thanks for your opinions on the advertising. The price that I was quoted was already 25% off the standard price, but I don't know if that is something that they usually offer just to sound good, or if it is genuine. I didn't have to ask for the 25% off so there may be some wriggle room. Would it be cheeky to offer £150 per issue per month?

Horace - I teach maths, science and physics but my company also offers biology, chemistry, economics and IT tuition (we specialise in the sciences) with our other tutors (who are all freelance). I enjoy the teaching side of it, it is lovely helping someone one-on-one and making a difference to them, I don't think I could do it in a classroom though!

Mudbath - Of course you are not being a terrible mother! At least you work from home so have a chance to pop in and see them, most working mothers don't have that luxury. They are old enough to probably quite enjoy entertaining themselves, I remember when I was a child my summers would be spent in the garden playing from morning til night!
  • Yes Mudbath please dont worry yourself. When I was younger my parents could never afford to take the whole holiday off to look after us so the holiday was divided between staying with grandparents, playschemes and having my parents friends older children coming over to 'babysit' us. I was never allowed to be left alone with my brother til I he was about 14 and me 17 as we would argue too much and fight! (We used to throw each other down the stairs....)

I'm sure you are doing a great job and your two sound very well behaved and well brought up.

    MY TYPING KEEPS VANISHING!!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

As I was saying.... you of course are not a bad mummy mudbath - if you are then that makes me a bad step mummy (but then we're meant to be a wicked breed anyway!) as I have left the 10 year old infront of the Xbox. He was unceremoniuosly dumped on us yesterday by his cow of a mother for 10 days without notice nor knowledge. I could not get anyone to cover for me this afternoon, had this morning off, so I am in the same bracket.

Charlotte, never pay the first price offered in advertising. Haggle, if need be take a smaller ad or over a longer time, or get a free write up along with your ad.

Read a bit more of DM's book last night - took huff with OH & the DSS & the cat and got into the car and drove to the town, bought a bottle of fanta & bar of choc & sat in the supermarket car park for half an hour just to have peace & quiet. I am currently living in the house that Jack built. Lord knows what "improvements" will have been made today. I had to wash the dinner dishes in the bathroom sink last night as I have no water in the kitchen.

    Hi,

I am i the process of setting up a lettings agency, based in my home town, will it be possible for me to set up a business bank account?

Have just applied for natwest step account so hopefully have some good history with them, although not major on the time front!

    Thanks

    Missal
  • Hi missal, once you have registered your business you will be able to set up a business account, I'm not sure if you can beforehand, I'm sure someone here will know! I remember when we set up with Lloyds they wanted all our business details.

Thanks everyone for the advice about the advert, I will contact them tomorrow and try to get them down. It is just so scary putting money down on advertising as ther are no guarantees that it will be worth it.

This afternoon I'm researching university society contact details, I thought that I could say that if they are interested, I will offer their members introductory discounts on proofreading/tuition and hopefully a few of them will agree to email the offer out to their members. There seems to be zillions of societies out there so hopefully some will think it would be useful to their members and be up for it. Will just have to write a nice email as if it works it will be great free advertising.
