I've officially had my first order from my website-woo-hoo!! only £8 but still evrything worked :-) Only now I'm having a brain meltdown about the bookwork. I do it all on paper-2 sections, one for expenses and one for customers. The customer paid £11.50, £8 for charm and £3.50 for postage. It went through paypal so I was charged 59p to withdraw. do I write £11.50 in the customer/incoming section and then 59p and postage cost (£1.39) in outgoings? Or can't I put the paypal charge in expenses?
I'm sure its simple but my head hurts!!!!
Any help most appreciated!0 -
Mizmir - I would make an appointment with the bank and see what they recommend, I am sure that when the time comes that you will be able to add another trading name to the account but I would check with the bank to make sure.
Mabel - well done on the sale. I would put the £11.50 from the customer as income and the paypal and postage fee as an expense.
I stayed up until the early hours finishing Deborah Meaden's book and have now identified that I am a true entrepreneur and can expect to go far. I can see opportunities where sometimes that opportunity hasn't been presented e.g. the linky with the entertainment agency. I emailed my old mentor at the chamber of commerce (he who helped me set up and test trade for 6 months) to advise him of this opportunity and he replied saying that he is constantly amazed by my networking ability which I use to create opportunities:D He got me thinking - is it only me that happens to because I can spot an opportunity where maybe none existed before or do other people do it too?0 -
Thanks Horace :-) Will be expecting to see you on Dragons Den in the near future...wanna invest in a jewellery company?..........0

Horace I will weep buckets if I read this book and I turn out to be a dunce! Now... what about a few saddles... never mind Mabel's jewelry... or what about Mabel's charms on the saddles.. NOW we're talking! Mabel, have you any horsey or doggy ones?
I have got another present today - I advised a lady not to buy the horse she had on trial as 1. it was far too dear and not worth half of what she was asked for 2. I used to compete against it and was there when it was badly injured which the owners didn't tell her and its leg would not stand up to the sort of work her daughter wants to do and she would end up with huge vets bills and 3. it has neither steering nor brakes for a 12 year old child and she would get hurt. She had thought alot of things herself and she said I had just confirmed what she had been thinking and she has brought me in a lovely tea towel with a horsey scene in fabric across the bottom and a box of chocs!
Miz - not sure about bank account names, I'm a sole trader but it just says the name of the business on the cheque book but that was after a row as they had the OH's name and the silly woman from the business start up on it as well t/a until I hit the roof.0 -
well done on the sale mm! Have you thought of leaving the money in paypal until you reach the £50 level to avoid the charge of withdrawing?
Trip to the States in on. Our agents are flying in as well to come to meetings with us. Its so surreal! We're meeting a few fashion houses and the shoe designer we worked with! Must not act like an idiot. Must be professional!
Sorry to go on, or sound like a tw@ for going on about working with fashion houses. I just get overexcited sometimes
Hope everyone has a productive weekend!0 -
Hi CM-no , no horses/dogs i'm afraid !! congrats on the free gifts :-)
Hi Purpleroses. Paypal seem to have abolished the withdrawal charge thank goodness so no prob there. And you go on as much as you want-that's so exciting!!!!! America and fashion designers-you are a lucky and very talented person :-)0 -
Sorry Mabel I am not in a position to invest in anything at the moment:D
TCM - you can pick up loads from her book - she even tells you how to let staff go which may be useful to you. Well done on the teatowel and the chocs:D It's a book that I will dip into now and again plus she has gone up in my estimation too:D
Oooh Purple - that's fab news - off to the States working with fashion houses - soon you will be too good for us poor folks on MSE:D You are an extremely talented person whereas I cannot even sew a button on or sew a hem:eek:0 -
Can one of you (or several of you) please cast your eyes over two paragraphs for me. I am not sure if they read ok or if I should add something about keeping to their budget? I need to send these to the entertainment folks to go onto their website (I have to make it look as though I work for them although I am a separate entity). Comments appreciated.
My name is Denise Meredith and I am pleased to be joining the team at LNP Sound. You could say that I am passionate about managing events and as a result have organised both large and small events for various businesses over the last 16 years. I am also a certified wedding planner with a Diploma from the Institute of Professional Wedding Planners.
I will source venues, caterers, hotel accommodation if required for your conference, exhibition, product launch, meeting or teambuilding event. I can also offer on the day management to ensure that your event runs smoothly, and can run registration desks dispensing name badges.0 -

Personally I think I'd cut out 'You could say that' (on the grounds that they are just extra words, but that's just a style thing). I'd also change the bit about 'registration desks dispensing name badges' - I'd expect a registration desk to do more than just hand out badges. Maybe can something like 'including manning a registration desk to ensure that on arrival your guests are greeted professionally and have all the information they need'. That's not very well worded, but do you see what I mean?
How about organising leaflets, invitations etc, is that something you'd offer?
More generally, how about something a bit more vague but exciting than sourcing venues 'I can work with you to find the perfect venue for your event, including decoration, catering to create the atmosphere you want' - I've got to run but something to think about maybe.0
