I know this sounds ridiculous, but have you tried mint or camomile herbal tea? Even if you don't like the flavours (and I don't like either of them) they help settle your stomach. Or even polo mints.

I am sorry its so bad for you - but I know what its like (hence the mint and camomile). About the jobs - are you really that stuck, i.e. not confident enough for one lot and overqualified for the other. What about agencies? Most of the IT people I know get quite a lot of work via agencies.

I understand the debt going up while you're trying to sort things out too . Absolutely horrible.... are you sure you've cut out everything you can? Do you need to go through your SOA again?

Reality is that 400-500 people are chasing every job going in our sector at the moment. Companies are still downsizing and the first to go are contractors. Lots of supposed vacancies don't actually exist, it's agents desperately trying to keep their jobs by building up massive dbs of CVs and used that to hassle firms. Other vacancies are duplicates, the same agency chasing the fee. Employers are driving themselves mad because they have too many to choose from and they're trying to play agencies off against each other to cut commissions. It's a bl00dy mess.

You are fab at what you do. Your clients loved you. This is the worst recession since the 1929 crash. It's not personal, it's not a reflection on you, it's simply the world at the moment.

    End of lecture.

Good on yah. Just don't be hard on yourself. OH walking into a job is so rare at the moment as to be gobsmacking.

KC it's a bloodbath. People I have known as contractors for years are taking anything and anyrate, problem is so is everyone else. Its almost impossible to work cross-sector why would they hire a finance expert for retail when they've 100 cv all of whom worked for ASDA in last 3 years.

They reckon it could take 10 years for this to stabilise so we all have to learn to ride the storm. Getting a job now doesn't mean it'll be any easier at renewal. And the terms are getting shorter, everyone is trying to squeeze blood. Started about 18mths ago, during the Bear Sterns crisis and just before Lehman's when RBS did a blanket cut of all contractor wages. Take a 10% cut or leave Friday. Rates since then have dropped between 30 and 50%, number of jobs has dropped by about 70 - 80%, market has also increased by all those laid off.

So less money, fewer jobs and bigger pool to choose from.

We all just have to keep going but no point feeling carppy about something you can't change.
