On a brief scan of the manual, I didn't see anything about this but I'll take another look. Many phones now are triband, and some quad - just need to find out ...... if triband it will have 1800 for here, and you can use it on Orange or T-mobile or Virgin.
edit - I'm told that it's quadband, but Motorola won't have subsidy codes - either contact the original network or dealers here ...
Thanks to all for your help, I think we'll be handing it back next time he decides to visit, and go get something else in this country.

The main chains don't usually do this. It will be more likely in smaller individual dealers. I don't know about recently, but you used to find one or two in places like freeads papers, and other people mention market stalls etc.
Or it might be possible that the original network would give you the codes free or cheap - can you find out which one it was?0 -

Some networks will unlock the phone at the end of the contract, but I don't know what American networks policy would be on this.
Maybe your ex could contact them; who knows, he might pay! You will need the serial number of the phone, which you get by pressing *#06#0 -

Well I bit the bullet and went into my local "dodgy looking" place and have to say I take it all back, the bloke was very nice and very knowledgeable!!!
According to him they can do it as the software is similar to the Motorola 454 (or was 545or 455) so they can use that, providing it's the older software in the phone. £15 to do it, no charge if they can't, so going back tomorrow with it.
But I will be taking some of the info from here............oh and Godders cos he can be a techie wizz at times and will understand what they're saying :rolleyes:Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts.
