It's only something like 30 seconds and the machine swallows your cash again, I've seen it happen to me. Appears as withdrawn for a few days then is refunded. So if you took your card, then looked in your purse again, do you actually know how long that took?

If I found money in a cash machine and someone come back a minute later I would still be holding it aloft with my mouth open. Most people can't lie that quick and I wouldn't, if asked, say no if I had found it. However if no one come back I would spend it on gin :D

I reckon your money went back in, have faith.

I found 10 which had been left in the dispenser drawer of the cash machine where I work. There was nobody about so I handed it in to the security guards who work at our office in the hope that somebody would come to claim it but wish I hadn't done now as I haven't heard anything else about it and now suspect that the guards have probably treated themselves to a few beers on it!!!

At least I was trying to be honest though!!!

Bumping this thread. The exact same thing just happened to my friend who had withdrawn £250 to pay some bills, and then walked away without it. Does anyone know, really, how long it takes before the machine does take it back in? There had been no-one behind her at the cash machines, and she has checked with the store (Sainsbury's bank machines outside Sainsbury's store), but no one handed any money in.
When she phoned her own bank to report it, the lady told her that if the money isn't taken within 5 minutes, then it is taken back into the machine......... surely 5 minutes is an excessively long time! There would be very few times, in a busy area when there wouldn't be someone around the machines for more than 5 minutes. She has been told she must go into her own branch of her bank, which she can't get to until next week, and fill in an ATM claim form and if a discrepancy is found, it will take about 6 weeks to have the money credited back to her. Does this sound about right?

i saw a £10 in the cash machine once, man had walked off without it, I chased after him and gave it back! He couldn't believe it! I couldn't take someone elses money, I couldn't live with the guilt!
I hope you get your cash back.

I didnt know the machine sucked the money back!!! strange that as last year I went to one of the cash machines outside our local asda with my grandson. all three machines were available and no-one looked to be walking away from them. there was a ten pound note sticking out of one of the machines and grandson thought he had the right to take it! I pointed out it wasnt our money and completed my own transaction. we then took the tenner to customer services. they logged it as found property and said if it wasnt claimed within 14 days we could claim it ourselves and gave us a reciept. grandson phoned 14 days later so i popped over to check - sure enough it hadnt been claimed so i gave it to grandson. not sure what else i could have done or asda could do.
I did the same thing once with my housekeeping money - £100 that week - I got all the way up the street before realising and ran back - the money was still there thank the lord even though dozens of people must have walked by!!!!

    An update (loooong overdue!)

I went to the HSBC branch and filled out the form. The personal banker was very nice about the whole thing, he said that they will check the end of day balance in the cash machine to see if there an outstanding amount and that I would hear from them within 6 weeks.

I don't know if they did actually check it - because I received my money back through a credit to my account in 5 days.

    Very pleased naturally. :)

I was stood behind someone who did the same sort of thing, was faffing for ages with the machine, grabbed his card and stormed into the bank leaving behind a good few hundred pounds behind.

I followed him in and said "excuse me you left this in the machine" his reply was
"huh" snatched the money and put his back to me. Fuming doesnt really cover it !!
