Forgot to take the money from the cashmachine

We were driving to the Farmers Market for a family day-out and stopped by at a petrol station to use a cashpoint. I needed £10 but the machine only had £20s. So I authorised the transaction and then I remembered that I must have already had £5 in my purse - and I couldn't see it. So I started looking for it in the compartments, then the cashpoint gave me back my debit card, I took it and kept looking, then went back to my car (parked in 4 metres) and then I realised that I hadn't taken the £20 note from the cashpoint.
I walked back - only about 15 seconds passed - and there was some guy using that cashpoint, actually he had only just put his card in. I asked if he'd seen any money here because I had forgotten to take it. He said no, there wasn't any money. So what could I do?
My husband was in the car and said there wasn't anybody by the cashpoint before that guy - so it must have been him who took my banknote. I know I had been stupid not paying attention with money (never ever happened to me before) but how could he just take the £20 after I even asked him if he'd seen it? I then checked the mini-statement - the money withdrawal had been completed.
I was really upset - what would you do if you were that guy? Or could I have done something?

The guy is probably innocent! If you don't take the money within a certain amount of time then the machine takes it back in again. I'd contact your bank.
Proud to be a MoneySaver!

I did this with £200 years ago, was panicking like anything. How could I have been so stupid?
Thankfully ther bank had a note of the transaction etc. and the money being taken back in and refunded me.
I admit I didn't tell my hubby for years about that one...:oMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I've done this a couple of times. The machine takes the money back in.
Go to your bank and there is a form that you can fill in to get the money back. It can take a few weeks depending on when the machine is next due to be reconcilied but you will get it.0 -
The mc takes it back in? within 15 seconds?, surely the odds are he took the money?0

Thanks - I didn't know that the machine might have taken the money back in! It showed on the statement that the money had been taken out.
I will contact my bank and hope for the best.0 -

it gets taken back fairly quickly, 15 seconds is not a bad guess. If the bloke had only just put his card in, he might well be innocent.
I've done it before, was in a huge rush, kids being monsters and just forgot, only £20, but I was very uspet! It took about 2 weeks for the money to come back as it wasn't my bank's machine.
Hope you get the money back0 -
Phone the bank, tell them the cash machine location
Cash machines record discrepancies between money given out and money left over.. it may take a few weeks but you'll get your money back0
