Same thing happened to me with £60. Guy behind me actually called me back to tell me the money had been sucked in.

I informed the bank who told me they check the tin for money twice a week and would let me know. They checked and there was no money there but refunded it as a goodwill gesture anyway:T.

Can't believe the guy behind took it and then pointed it out to me. Some people are real scum.

Most ATMS have a secret camera but as it is a petrol station then you would need CCTV.It depends if it is an internal mobile ATM or one fixed to the wall outside of petrol stations.

Thanks everyone, I was at the bank today and left an enquiry. They said the investigation might take a few weeks but hopefully my money had indeed been swallowed back by the cashpoint.

That guy, who used the ATM after me, didn't need to become a thief for the sake of £20 pounds.

I walked back - only about 15 seconds passed - and there was some guy using that cashpoint, actually he had only just put his card in. I asked if he'd seen any money here because I had forgotten to take it. He said no, there wasn't any money. So what could I do?

I know it's frustrating but rather than beat yourself up about it, have a bit of faith in human nature. If the guy had taken your money, he'd have been more likely to walk straight away with it than put his own card in. If he was thinking, they'd be able to identify him by his card and he might not have needed the cash if he had yours.

I hope it gets sorted - I'm sure the bank will be contacting you about the discrepancy in the machine very soon.

Not so fast ! If some stranger walked up to me and ask that question I'd say no as well.

Would you have taken "some stranger's" - i.e. not yours - money then? Especially if that stranger came looking for it in less than a minute?

If that guy did take the £20 then yes, he could be too embarrassed to admit it and decided to just keep it.

I was waiting to use a cash machine at my local shop last week and the guy in front of me pulled out a receipt from it and walked out of the shop. When I got to to the machine it was still asking if he wanted another service. I looked out of the shop door and he had gotten into his car and driven off. I pressed 'no' and the card came out. I handed his card to the woman behind the counter. I'm guessing he wasn't allowed to draw money out and that's why he left in a hurry, but still, you have to have your wits about you when using cash machines.

I didn't know they sucked uncollected money back in.

I did this a few years ago with £40 - had my mind on something else and was in a rush. There was no-one else at the cash point and the machine took the money back in, I had to ring the bank and eventually got my money back but took a few weeks.

You'll have to wait until the branch that runs the machine you used go to balance it. Unfotunately it doesn't happen very often at machines that are off the premesis as it takes a couple of staff out of the branch for a couple of hours. I'm sure you will get the money back if the ATM retracted it. Good luck.

Not all ATMS suck it back in!!.:p ..I withdrew £60 from Barclays atm,i was busy putting card away, and thinking what shop i am going to next, that i walked away from it sitting in the slot in machine.
I walked 100 yrd down road, then 200 yds approx around corner,a good 2-3mins...before i went back into my purse to get a lottery ticket out,and saw i had no money. .i ran straight back to machine on a busy town high street, and the money was still sat there!! Phew.. amazed as there is normally a queue at this mc.:T
