Need to find a cheap prom dress for daughter, help!

I've been told by a few people that the hire ones are starting to run out! Apparantly all the schools locally have their prom on the same night - what genius that of that!
I will go with her this weekend and go into TKMaxx, Monsoon, and every other clothes shop in Plymouth! (my daughter hates shopping so it will be purgatory for her, but if she wants to look nice on the night...)
Thanks for the links thriftybelle, I'll check them out.
Thanks for all the ideas. That's a good thought dreamyd, I could try Exeter if I can't find anything in Plymouth. But hopefully I'll find something locally. Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

I used http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/bobo_dress/
I've just checked the dress that my daughter had and the price has gone up by quite a lot. It's now listed at £29.99 plus £16.99 p&p. I'm sure we paid £17.99 plus £12.99 p&p. Hope this helps.0 -

They look stunning in the picture, but too cheap and as I'm always thinking if it looks to good to be true........... So anyone bought one?
My sis bought her bridesmaids dresses like this and the quality was definitely lacking, the measurements were also all wrong with one being so wrong it had to be completely re-constructed with a corset style back as it was too small. The complicated parts of the dress (like the straps and round the neck thing, cant remember the name of that style now...) were also wrong and had to be redone also.... they were also over a week late and the communication was awful (no replies to emails, promises made etc) it ended up costing a futune to have all this fixed at the very last minute .....
I personally wouldnt go down that route as Im sure I aged another 10 years due to this.

I bought my sisters prom dress from http://www.bidspotter.com/ they have various online auctions (make sure to check its in the uk though), they sell off old stock from businesses which have gone under. (i also bought my wedding dress from here, i paid £70 for a dress worth £1000)
Other than that try charity shops, I bought a more than fabulous cocktail dress from a charity shop for my prom and because it wasn't too prom dress-y I've been able to wear it on several occasions since.
You can also try any car boot sales in your area, especially good for all the accesories required. (you probably don't want to fork out for a £40 pair of shoes just for your daughter to say that they hurt her feet!)0 -
Thank's to all that replied. Last night she came in saying her and her friends want to hire a fire-engine to take them there because it will be different!!!!
How much money does she think we have. Ticket to buy £50 school want to hold it in posh hotel (same one the england football team stay in before they play) then dress, shoes, hair. Also says I may as well get a fake tan and my nails done. When I left senior school we had a disco at school which the teachers put on.0 -
I've just skimmed through this thread so apologies if anyone else has mentioned this. For my DD's prom last year (aged 16) we went to Marks & Spencers in Manchester & got a beautiful dress in exactly the design & style she wanted for £54. It was part of the wedding section & a lot cheaper than I had envisaged. Worth a look maybe? HTH0

I was in BHS today in Preston and they seemed to have some reasonable dresses ... I would have put a flouncy underskirt with some of them and then some strappy shoes etc and they would look fab!0

Maybe its worth looking out for some stick on nails in sale somewhere like claire's accessories? Would be more gentel on her nails and cheaper than getting them done professionally. Maybe a family friend or relative could do her hair - my sister did mine for my leavers ball - we practices afew times before hand and looked on the internet for pictures and tutorials (just via google), stayed in better than friends who had paid to have their hair done - think it was the practice!0

Had the same issue for my prom about 3/4 years ago, so me and my mum hunted on ebay, after looking in all tk maxx's! bought a coast dress on ebay with tags still on for £40, was supposed to be £160, was so impressed and everyone loved it! would say if you buy off ebay to ask the seller for measurements, i did and then i could see if it would fit me. hope you find one.Started comping: Dec 08
Recent WINS: AEGON Classic tickets, face pack.
I would like to win in 2014: Money (any!), festival tickets, any wedding stuff and a hotel stay/holiday!0 -
I got a gorgeous deep red Coast dress size 12 on Ebay for £35. It was advertised as new but a second because some beads were missing. When it arrived it had a pack of spare crystal beads and the "missing" bit was unnoticeable, so I didn't even bother to sew them on. it was a strapless dress otherwise I would have offered you a loan of it.....What goes around comes around.....I hope!0
