Guests expecting us to pay for their outfits

  • If he is part of the wedding party (usher, bestman etc) and you require him to wear something you are deciding , ie a colour combination, or traditionally a morning suit, then I would not expect him to pay.

If he is part of the wedding party and can wear whatever he wants or simply a guest that can wear whatever he wants then he should sort himself out.

But if you have told him he must dress smart in a purple shirt or whatever then you would traditionally be expected to contribute.

Thanks no we have not said he needs to wear anything in particular only trousers shirt and shoes - fairly smart - no colour tone etc, but i know he would not consider wearing anything cheap or from a branded store - even his underwear is all designer, my boyfriend cant lend him anything as to be honest he doesnt have anything himself in his wardrobe to wear hence we are having to buy him all new - not designer i hasten to add

he dont know yet that we are not inviting his two children from a previous relationship to be honest we hardly ever see them apart from xmas to give them a pressie - he sees them every week but we have to draw the line, no doubt that will be wrong too - when we send the invite for him and his current girlfriend only and not his baby or two childre.

Oh I can see where this thread'll go. ;) There was a huge thread/debate on the rights or wrongs of inviting or not inviting children to a wedding!

Get your protective gear on now!!!:D

The registry office only holds a certain number and we cannot invite any more he is welcome to bring them to the meal only but we cannot have anymore at the registry office unless they sit in the car and wait.

It has nothing to do with the cost just the numbers allowed in the registry office.

I think it is only fair to invite the children who we see regularly - all family mind

  • If he isn't part of the wedding party then I would tell him where to go.

If he is, it is a different kettle of fish, I wouldn't dream of asking someone to be involved in my wedding and then saying they had to buy their own clothes...

I find it utterly unbelievable that you are even asking advice and debating this!!! Are you seriously considering it? Give yourself a slap - then slap your OH and make him tell him no :rotfl:

Where family are concerned there is no reason why they can't be put straight from the beginning. Friends I agree there could be a small amount of embarassment but family? My god - this guy is seriously deluded if he thinks his wedding outft should be paid for.

Re reading this it sounds like a rant at the OP, it's not - I just really can't believe the cheek of some people.

I'm going to 4 weddings this year - that could give me a nice little capsule wardrobe if I followed the OP's BILTB thinking :rotfl:

After 4 years of heartache, 3 rounds of IVF and 1 loss :A - we are finally expecting our miracle Ki11en - May 2014 :j

And a VERY surprise miracle in March 2017!

This is not your problem at all, don't even acknowledge it or consider buying his outfit. Sounds like he's got his priorities all wrong. There are people in the world who can hardly afford any clothes, let alone designer.

Don't worry about it and have a wonderful day :-)
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

If it's a budget wedding with casual dress, then that's what everyone wears. You're not expecting to pay for anyone else's clothes, are you?

Wedding etiquette about who pays for what has changed over the years, but it does depend on what kind of a wedding. If you've decided on 'budget and casual' that's what it is.

This reminds me of when my younger daughter got married in 1993. The numbers to be invited were severely limited because the reception was held on a preserved steam train and only 90 could be accommodated in the 'Pullman' dining car. She married into quite a big extended family and several people were disappointed, but it was, as you say, down to space.

The cheek!! Either (if you would rather he was there) tell him to wear what he likes, or (as I would feel like if this happened to me!) tell him not to bother.
I can't really comprehend someone doing this  , mind you I can't comprehend the mortgage holiday for a holiday either
