SVP (great online store) has this offer:
Smashing the £20 barrier at SVP!
UK's First 16x DVD Writer with 8x DL for Under £20
This drive writes all commonly available discs including the latest high-capacity double-layer discs. It may be cheap, but it's not sub-standard. It uses Philips technology. Philips co-invented the CDR, so they should know a lot about optical drives!

External ones are connected to your computer by a wire. (very useful for older laptops).
It is also possible to buy a casing set to make an internal one into an external one.
If you explore around the SVP site you'll find more info.Keep smiling!0 -

Is it easy to fit an internal DVD writer, for a complete novice. Does the writer come complete with cables and software?
Thanks0 -
It is easy to dom unless its a boxed drive it wont come with software or cables, perhaps some screws and a spare jumper. OEM drives are just a drive in a sellothane wrapper.
It takes about 10 mins to put a drive in you normally need one spare cable form power supplier and one spare ribbon cable which is normally going spare.
