I wonder if you might be able to help me out, folks..we're wanting to record from camcorder mini dv onto dvd, and play them on a dvd-ram dvd-r/rw player (the Panasonic DMR-ES20 that got rave reviews on here but hasn't got dv input). I've been told we need a firewire card and dvd writer to do this from our pc, and don't know where to start. In simple terms, can anyone advise me on what I'll need to get/avoid? We're on a tight budget, and I'm scared of buying complicated things that I won't understand! Any advice would be very much appreciated, would any of the dvd rewriters on here be useful for us, or would we need to fit them/have some technical knowledge? Thanks in advance! Luce0

You will need a writer, preferably one that does DVD-Ram, like the LG or NEC usually under £30, you can get a firwire card for less than £20 even at PCW. The relevant software should have come with the camera. You should be able to fit it youself, a screwdriver and a little care is needed.

Thanks for that. Sorry, I didn't mean to clog up this thread. Went into Comet where a young man (they're getting younger!!) said they have an internal dvd writer for £50 that does all the pluses and minuses and dvd ram thing(quite dear?), but more importantly explained it all in great detail, so I'm not as frightened now and thanks, I'll be looking for a cheap one on the net and getting me toolbox out! These are the ones they Mis-sold for £29.99, at the beginning of the year, as recording to RAM.
The suffix "D" means they dont record but do play RAM.
They are "old" stock as the current model is 111D.ac's lovechild0 -
Hi Lucy,
I had similar techno fears as you. An alternative which I opted for was to buy a DVD Recorder (which sits on my TV) that will handle your Camcorder requirements. I bought one with built in Hard Drive and Firewire / AV connections on the front. I've been delighted with it. It's a total doddle to load Camcorder footage onto DVD and to edit it using the DVD's hard drive, then copy to disc for back up. I paid £116 for the Yamada 9000 unit and have been very pleased.
I realise you opted to buy your Panasonic but you could sell it and upgrade to something like I've mentioned. Personally, I find this (via the TV) approach so much more straight forward than using my computer for the task.
Hope that's of some help,
Cheers, Wilf.Keep smiling!0 -

Hey Wilf! How's it going?? Thanks for the reply, hope you're ok and still freecycling? I think the pc option will be better seeing as I'm so bad with the camcorder at the mo...editing it via Windows Moviemaker (still to look into getting the software for that) sounds quite fab, someone mentioned that you can put stills in, and get rid of gaps in the filming which there will be a plenty, no doubt! Lol! The dvd recorder I got is a bit fab (probably cos we've never had a dvd player, let alone a recorder) so I'm reluctant to get rid, as it had freeview and suchlike, and as it turns out is compatible with all discs inc the dvd ram thing. It's such a headache all this. So we're just after a cheap rewriter that does the ram thing now (so to speak, lol!) and a firewire card (and directions as to where to stick it, ahem!). Btw, we're expecting again:T , due in mid January, so even more chaos awaits.... Luce0
