Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy my first DVD-Writer and wondered if this is a good deal.

I would have put this in the "I wanna buy it/do it" forum but it looks like a good deal so it's here. It's only £24.98 including delivery which seems good value. As they don't specifically mention "Retail" I guess it's a bare drive only though.

Question 1: In the specs below it mentions "5x DVD-RAM". I can't figure out wether it writes to DVD-RAM or just reads them. Anyone know?

Question 2: Is it a uk compatible model (region) or not. I've tried Googling it for features/specs & most websites seem to be Australian. I know it will physically work in my pc but if it's an Australian model will I lose anything.

  • If it writes to RAM disks, it's a steal!

Sony UK website doesn't recognise the model number which is strange -

Spec for the ubiqutous Pioneer 110 quotes x5 for RAM write speed so it could be worth a punt....

Spec looks fine, price is good too... I'm presuming that at this sort of price it's an OEM (no software or cables) but that shouldn't be a problem if i't repalcing some form of cd'combo drive already...

Does it write to DVD-RAM though, or just read RAM, that's what I was wondering. I'm still not having much luck confirming this. I'd rather have one that's writes to all media.

  • If it quotes 5x RAM, it will write to them. Good luck finding any discs though, as most people use either DVD+R or DVD-R now. The region is set by the user and can be changed up to 5 times until it remains permanent. You can get "dodgy" hacked versions of the firmware (think of it as the drives operating software) which remove the region locking altogether.

£11.99 for a pack of 10 (3x speed). Beauty of DVD-RAM is that you can use them like a floppy disc, drag&drop. Makes for easy PC-Backups, that's why I want RAM-writability

Not saying that you're wrong but I read that the latest Pioneer 110 writes to DVD-RAM whereas the previous verion of the 110 only read DVD-RAM.

I just want to make absolutely sure that this Sony one will write DVD-RAM. Otherwise I'll just pay a little more & buy an NEC/Samsung/LG
