The contract sounds similiar to the Retired Greyhound Trust one we signed on adopting our dogs, basically we are the keeper but not owner. They can come and check on the dog and remove it if they deem necessary, which i think allows them to legally remove a dog from a bad situation before it gets to a stage of abuse.

I personally like being contracted to return the dogs to them if circumstances mean they need a new home as i know that way a new owner will be vetted and provides security for the dogs.

I think the food part is probably more of a recommendation to try and avoid a problem. RGT provide quite a lot of material to new owners so they would probably put it in there, maybe this rescue adds it to contract as they don't have seperate guide.

It sounds harsh about rehoming if it gets returned when lost, but i think in reality if you rang and informed them the dog had got lost they'd probably provide a lot of support and return it if picked up. If BIL is really concerned about the comment he should ring the rescue to confirm, i'm sure they wouldn't be angry with an owner which asks for advice and is keen to keep the dog. Some folk are just not very good dealing with people too.
