The BTL explosion - was it all just about money?

When I was asked that once I became more senior I used to 'lie'. Not in a big way but give an ambiguous description of my job that could most easily be interpreted as me being a 'nobody'.
It was interesting to watch reactions, especially at 'smart' do's (does?)
PS !!!!!! is the plural of a 'do' as in Party?
So what are you now mate?0 -
... make money from not doing a lot. Like investing in the stock market, gold, the lottery, being a computer programmer...And banks do fund people to go and buy antiques at auction and resell them - they are called antiques dealers.
But maybe I used a wrong example as it wasn't the example you were supposed to focus on, but the concept that "anybody" could borrow vast sums based on nothing really. If our mate the bin man had wandered into the bank in his lunch time and asked to borrow £200k with no deposit because he thought he could flip oil paintings, would he have been taken seriously? Depends. If every piece of artwork produced over the previous 10 years was worth around 200k, no matter how good quality, and had tripled in value then the answer might have been: Yes.
But then that's the bank's fault, not the bin man's.0 -
I didn't tell them at work too as some people get jealous and it creates problems, word soon gets out though when your mobile rings about a maintenance item or in response to an advert.
We only have one property we rent out, it has always had the same tenants there and we have a letting agency that's great and sorts everything out for us. So it's nice and easy to stay 'under cover'.
edit: I should add that our rental property and the flat we live in add in up value to probably half the sole value of many of my workmates 4 bed, exec, detached houses. But for some reason if you mention you rent a house out they assume you are rich beyond their wildest dreams. My bosses boss was talking about his new car last week and mentioned the cost, which was exactly 6k less than we bought our lovely 2 bed flat for only two years ago. Strange old world.0 -

Fortunately I didn't choose that particular career path. Much as I like to admire my figure in the mirror (I have to view portions of it at a time, it's not a particularly wide mirror), I don't think the ladies (get it Fungus?) would pay much to view it.
Fetish club maybe doll? :eek:0 -

Yes, wouldn't it be brilliant if dogs & cats had LEDs, with an accompanying code-book explaining what the patterns of lights meant?0 -
