Correct Rik. I'm directly connected to the modem via a USB cable. The Modem and gubbins are downstairs. I need the internet upstairs!

The lights are green only when the homeplugs are connected to the same socket as Leopard suggested in an earlier post. When I configure it how its supposed to be ethernet and data lights are flickering still.

    I think this is significant.

If the powerline adaptors only connect to each other when they're connected to the mains via the same power socket - as opposed to sockets in different rooms - it suggests a problem with the wiring (whatever else may be happening).

I should perhaps make it clear that the analogy I gave of two powerline adaptors being a similar process to a long stretch of cable - although correct in regard to a pair of them - is somewhat simplistic. They in fact incorporate an inbuilt routing system of their own and when the wiring of the premises is compatible you can operate several of them without a separate router. This makes it extremely unlikely that you would need a crossover lead.

For your own application you may find "Scenario 3" on this page helpful.

So scenario three the homeplug connected to the modem is plugged into nothing?

Will have to bow out for this evening. Many thanks for all your guidance. I appreciate it.

goto WINDOWS UPDATE (When connected to the net obviously). CUSTOM and install any HARDWARE drivers you can

    Then ~

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

    hmmmm

Im wondering if your machines infected. It could be preventing the ethernet from working and partially effecting what IS working

    Shut down your anti virus
    Run COMBOFIX
    Post the log it creates

    then goto DEVICE MANAGER
Right click anything 'ethernet' related and attempt to UPDATE DRIVER (Search automatically). Its should use the net to scan for any updates it can find (if any)
