Have been with A&L for two years and have found them to be the worst i have ever delt with, today i have applied to move my account to first direct. A&L need the good offers to keep customers as they don't have a service to speak off. btw if you put 141 in front of the leeds number you can still speak to a human, the liverpool number seems to only be automated.

    i'm voting with my feet....

I have just opened an A&L Premier Direct Account and Regular Saver, and transferred DD's, etc. to it. Although some of the views in this thread make me nervous, I have received excellent CS from A&L so far, and I find their their online banking site very good. Mind you, I've just switched from HSBC so I guess my expectations may be low!

A&L won't have my salary for a while, as it will continue to go into the HSBC account, to clear the part of the overdraft that I couldn't transfer. After this, I will transfer salary to A&L provided they have done nothing to p*ss me off.

It seems to me, reading various posts to this forum, that you could name any bank on the planet, and there would be some that would hate them with a passion and some that see them as the best thing since sliced bread. I've just spent about a month changing my financial setup quite radically, with the new A&L account and various pots of money with ING and ICICI for medium and long term expenses, so I'm not inclined to change at the moment.

One thing I'm wondering though: when i transferred my DD's I asked A&L if they could all be chaged to the 28th of the month, so the money that I am transferring in on the 1st would sit there for the longest possible time earning interest. They may have totally ignored my request, but assuming this happens and under present circumstances, I may be getting into trouble with some of the DD recipients. Perhaps I need to speak with CS...

  • Bank with First Direct and you will not use the words "poor customer service from my bank again!" Well IMO anyway! :D

Are you going to get your £50 bonus?
If yes, it is worth switching your salary to A&L and then transfer money to HSBC.
If not, it isn't late yet to change your mind. See FREE Money (For Opening Accounts) - Referrals (or PM me).
  • I have had a few bank accounts and always find Barclays the hardest to deal with even in the branch they shove you from one teller to the other because they only do certain tasks at each desk... why one can not deal with all enquiries with the technology they have I will never understand.

I have banked with A & L since way back when they plain old Girobank and never had a problem with them.... Hubby and I have several Accouts between us, he uses telephone banking and I use the online facility and make many transactions between us regularly.. as far as I remember we have never had a missed payment or unpaid direct debit in many years of banking with them.. All my family bank with them also and as far as I know are happy with the service they get.....

I just recently with a phone call changed to their Premier Direct online Acc and it was very smoothly done with all the regular payments going out ontime as they always do.... I guess its a case of horses for courses and you can't please all the people all the time but I have nothing but good to say about them........ obviously if I had had a bad service from them I would be voting with my feet also....

I did receive one of those Phishing emails asking me to confirm my bank details and it was impossible to tell it from the authentic A & L webpage , but as I was aware that a bank would never ask me to do that I forwarded the email to A & L fraud investigation team .............

I too have banked with A&L from when Giro bank started.
The one problem I had was with a cheque to a third party got to my account before cash paid in a day earlier.
They wanted to charge me, but a phoncall sorted it out.
    I have no complaints
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Just spoke to A&L RE: the 1,000 transfer limit.

Apparently its because they have had a lot of phishing complaints recently (when you get email invites asking to 'update' your A&L account details, which are NOT from A&L, thereby getting hold of your account details/passwords)

The 1,000 is a temporary measure for 2, maybe 3 weeks. The limit will then be raised to 2,500 then 5,000 then back to what it was. (I cant remember whether there was a limit before, or was it quite large, like 25,000?)

If this is a temporary measure how come no-one seems to know about it? If they are worried about phishing emails then surely their security is strong enough? Do they are think the 'phishers' are going to mind only nicking £1000 a day?

Where is the big online notice explaining what they are doing?
