DO NOT OPEN AN A&L ACCOUNT!

Just a warning in case you have missed it - you can no longer pay bills or transfer sums greater than £1000 per day from A&L current accounts! Got credit cards to pay off? Tough - only £1000 per day. Want to transfer YOUR money to a savings account somewhere else? Tough - not more than a grand - and if you've paid a bill already that day, sorry - no more transfers.
I cannot beleive a bank can restrict movement of your own money like this but for me - it is now a complete waste of space. Will be closing as soon as the interest free period has ended.

Do you agree this makes the A&L account worthless? 56 votes

That is truly ludicrous. All of our bills go out on the same day, which if you also use this method, a large mortgage could use this or most of it up in one go. Hubby has tried to open one of these, and they cocked up the pay transfer so it still isn't active four months later. They admit it, but ridiculous. Will be ok as most of the bills go from my account, but there is no way a large section of their customers must be able to use this now.Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early

Aside from this issue I have been trying to open an an A&L account and have been refused as they claim they cannot see me on the electoral role for my prev address. (where I lived for 6 years and voted regularly). Spoke to my old electoral registration officer who confirms I am on the archives. A&L won't move though they say I can appeal, but how will this alter the fact that their credt ref agency, Experian, cannot see my electoral role data. Incidentally my husband's name is on A&L's data. (I am sure they should not have been able to tell me that!)
Any idea anyone? I will phone Experian but I am sure they will charge me to even have a conversation!
Is A&L actively trying to put people off openeing an account one wonders?0 -
When were users supposedly notified of the change? I haven't had anything through.0

You should be on the electoral roll for your present address, not the previous one.0 -
I am but I have only been here for 9 months and they require 3 years history.Maisy_Mouse wrote:Aside from this issue I have been trying to open an an A&L account and have been refused as they claim they cannot see me on the electoral role for my prev address. Just spoke to A&L RE: the 1,000 transfer limit.
Apparently its because they have had a lot of phishing complaints recently (when you get email invites asking to 'update' your A&L account details, which are NOT from A&L, thereby getting hold of your account details/passwords)
The 1,000 is a temporary measure for 2, maybe 3 weeks. The limit will then be raised to 2,500 then 5,000 then back to what it was. (I cant remember whether there was a limit before, or was it quite large, like 25,000?)

A slightly misleading post, since telephone banking transfers are exempt from the current temporary online restriction.rosbif wrote:Just a warning in case you have missed it - you can no longer pay bills or transfer sums greater than £1000 per day from A&L current accounts! I have asked A&L to close all my accounts (personal current, regular saver, savings, ISA, business current) because I found their Customer Service department abysmal. The request was made over a month ago now, all accounts are still open, even though they sent me written confirmation that they have received my request for closure.
I withdrew the money online from all bar the ISA myself - no problem with any limits, but this must have been before they introduced the limits. They are their usual difficult selves when it comes to transferring the ISA - this has been pending for 3 weeks now, and they wouldn't accept a written transfer request (complete with signed authorisation from me) from my new ISA provider. Explanation was that this is an online ISA and transfer requests cannot be made by letter. Of course (!), there is also no way to request an ISA transfer online, only thing you can do is withdraw, but that's not what I want to do. Several telephone calls (to 0870 number  ) later, and hopefully they will now transfer the money this week or next. I am really annoyed that they are unable to give me a date for when they will do the transfer. Luckily, I had no direct debits or standing orders that needed moving.
Only upside is that some 10 days ago I had a brown envelope from A&L containing a cheque for £50. No accompanying note, I suspect it is the £50 for opening a personal current account. Naturally I happily cashed this cheque

Just in the process of removing my salary payment from A&L back to Cahoot, after which I'll close the A&L account - as I recall you can't just leave these accounts open as they have charges if you don't fund them.0
