Will see if I can do all that. Have never done a re-install - sounds scary.
Also have progs that I dont have discs for. Can I back them up too? Is it easy to do?
I bought an external HD a while ago but have never been able to get it to work. Could that be because its USB 2? My machine is pretty old and only have USB 1.:o0 -
As to Manufacturers disks
I built the system myself and a friend put the operating system on .
Have got floppys with the OS but not all the rest of the software.
Can't access same prgrams as friend now a very long way away!:o0 -

Do you have the serial number for Windows 2000? If not, it may be possible to extract it from the system - I'll Google about that in a bit.
If you have a serial number for 2000, then I see no reason why you shouldn't download the 2000 CD yourself, burn it and install from that. The fact that you're downloading 2000 isn't illegal - it's the fact that using an illegal serial number that is morally wrong.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html - that should find your Windows 2000 serial, but note down any others too.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0

My mate has an MP3 player that will not work through USB1. HAS to be USB 2 else its not seeing it (Even though it knows 'somethings' been plugged in as it makes the noise):idea:0

Right, brand new day, am determined to sort this.
First up I booted up using F8 and selected 'lst known good configuration' or whatever the words were. Then ran CCleaner but only the first scan. (Rik, why do I need to untick 'cookies'?).
Then managed a Hijack This but not yet managed to post that log.
Then with everything else closed tried to run Combofix.
It was doing ok but all is now frozen and the Avira window has opened to say "Antivir identified Combofix\N_\15229 contains code of Eicar-Test-Signature virus.
It then asks what I want it to do but as the system has frozen again I can't do anything!
Any ideas out there?
Please?0 -
Power the machine off completely. Then, using F8 again, restart the computer into safe mode, then immediately disable Avira, or any other firewalls and antivirus software. Then run Combofix, and see how it gets.
I recommend getting what you need from the computer (my documents, emails, favourites, serial numbers, etc), and formatting the whole system and reinstall Windows again. I wouldn't trust your system, regardless of how many tools you've run to try and clean it up.
At this point, I have to ask why you're not using XP?Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0
