    Right Birth Story.

On Saturday night I felt a funny burning sensation in my lower left side, and felt kind of restless. It was about 10.40, so I decided to go straight to bed, 'just in case' I had a really good nights sleep and was woken (Sunday 15th) at 6.30 by period pain style cramps, not very strong but enough to convince me that maybe it was the start of something!!

I stayed in bed until the boys woke at 7.30am and then got up too, all the time I had been getting the fairly mild pains, I went to the loo on getting up and when wiping had tons, and tons of mucus (had to wipe at least 6-7 times to clear it) I felt even more that something was happening, but didn't want to get myself to excited so kept myself calm by constantly reminding myself of stories where contractions die off, or shows happen days before labour even starts.

Anyway, decided to start timing them, and they were coming anywhere between 7&17 minutes...I carried on timing them most of the morning and when they were more frequently every 7 minutes I gave the Labour ward a quick call to let them know. This was at about 11.30am. The community midwife gave me a call back and arranged to come out and give me a quick check over, she arrived about 12(ish) I was about 1cm but stretching to 3cm, so off she went, leaving me with instructions to call back if they become more regular/intense. There had been no change when she called me at 2pm, to find out how I was.

3pm came and they did start to become closer and more intense, I carried on with a few cleaning jobs and at 6pm I had two really painful ones. Just as I was contemplating phoning up, the phone rang and it was the midwife. She said she would come out within half an hour and set up my entenox for me and check me again...Wayhaay I was 6cm when she arrived at 6.30. She said she would stay now, and we set up the area where I would be birthing and by 7.10 I was on the G&A (thankfully).

I was asked if it was ok for a student midwife to attend, to which I agreed, and i'm glad I did as she was lovely, and it was her first attendance at a home birth, she was very grateful to me.

7.35pm they checked me and I was 8cm and I decided to have my waters broken as the bulging waters were what was causing me the most pain at this point and I really wanted it to hurry up and get it over with now!! After breaking them, they helped me get into a more comfortable position for the birth. Which happened to be kneeling on a pillow on the floor leaning over the sofa. I could feel him bearing down more and more with every contraction, alhtough I was out of it on the G&A it was at this point the second midwife turned up I vaguely remember her being introduced to me...

The pain was intense now but I could feel the end was coming, By 7.50 I felt like pushing, so I did but no sign of head on the first two lots of pushes...then I felt it, it was so painful yet so relieving at the same time, if that makes any sense!!

His head suddenly appeared and he flew out at 8.08pm through the fingers of the student midwife and was only just caught by my midwife she quickly chucked onto my back on my nightie so he wouldn't slither away. They sorted all the cord cutting business out and gave the synto injection, then helped me turn over and pop my bum on the edge of the sofa to deliver the placenta.

the midwives quickly cleaned up all the mess, and we shouted the boys down to see the baby...they were a bit weirded out by it all and wanted to just escape back up tho their room, which we let them do.

The only problem that happened was Kai had bled slightly back into his cord and it had to be double clamped, but was bulging of blood. The midwives were slightly concerned it may bleed, so arranged for me to nip to hospital to get it checked out. We left the house at 11pm and were back by 11.50pm, so it was a pretty quick trip.

Sorry about the novel:) It was a truly lovely experience and if (when) baby 4 comes along I will definitely be doing it the same way:D:D

Mel - Kai is gorgeous, well done on the birth.
Jillie - Good luck with your scan.

I am off work today (and yesterday) with the cold. Been getting a lot of congestion since being pregnant, and lots of nosebleeds. I could have gone into work today, but thought I would take another day off to recover. Plus it means I can keep up with everyone here better than trying to read it all when I get home!! Back to work tomorrow so it will be back to minimal posts.

    Anyone else suffering from nosebleeds?
