  • Always do at least one a day. I very rarely use the dryer so depending whats happening outside depends if I chuck another in. On average its about 10 loads per week.

Given up trying to count how many wash loads I do a day!! I try not to use the dryer too much but I hate the fact that the house looks like a chinese laundry all the time.

I always check that clothes are wiffy and/or dirty before putting them on the washing pile. I always wash full loads. CHange bedding & towels once a fortnight unless necessity requires more frequently. Despite doing this i end up washing every day - some days 2 loads. I reckon about 9 loads a week.

Where does it all come from? How did our grandparents manage without automatic machines?

They washed once a week, but it took all day to get everything done. I remember my mother doing the washing on the same day every week, she started with the lightly soiled stuff in the washing machine, then went progressively through the washload, all in the same water mind you. Once she'd gone through everything once, then the machine was emptied and refilled with clean water and everything was rinsed, put through the electric wringer, then hung out to dry. Ironing was done either later that day or the next, and she ironed everything including socks, underpants and bras!

The wash did, as I said, take all day, but the amount of soap powder and water (and electricity) she used to get a week's wash clean was minimal compared to what I use in my automatic.

(For the record I do a wash about 3-4 times a week; there are 4 of us in the house and I make sure the machine is full before turning it on. Obviously underwear changed daily, other things re-worn if not dirty or sweaty. Bedding every two weeks. I do the absolute minimum ironing I can get away with too.)

Two adults in our house, and usually 3 loads a week (occasionally 4) - 1 dark, 1 light, and 1 bedding + towels. Try to get it all done over the weekend so we don't have the airer up all week (especially in winter), and I only tumble-dry sheets & towels.

Just me to consider unless I have the dogs. I do 1 dark wash, 1 light wash. In summer light wash is about once a week and dark wash once every ten days and vice versa for winter. Bedding and towels get done once a week too. The dogs towels and bedding get washed separately. I always make sure the washing machine is full and use a 30C wash where I can and I use an A rated washing machine.

Theres 3 of us and we do on average about 10-16 loads a week. Bedding is done on a friday and is 3 loads for ours and DD's bedding. Towels, tea-towels weekly etc. Due to health problems, I sometimes have accidents and this obviously means more washing.

wow Becles thats a very organised routine!!!

i probably do about 8-10 loads a week , thats for me OH and 2 kids.
always amazes me when get back from 2 weeks holiday and theres only about 8 loads to go on, does that mean we are twice as dirty at home? less fussy about the state of our clothes on holiday? we still seem to change nearly as often. dont know whats going on.

As above really, how much washing do you do in a week? There are only two of us, plus the cat and I sometimes worry that we have the washing machine on too often. We do use eco friendly washing stuff, and recycle the grey water for our garden (in Oz - we need the water) but even so, it's not great environmentally nor financially. Our water bill averages $0.31 a day which is fine, and we beat the government target of 155 litres a day per person but if I can get it down more, I'd love to.

I go to the gym 4 times a week, and OH goes to footie once a week. Other than that, we shouldn't generate too much - just the normal office clothes and weekend bumming around stuff. We're not the sort to wear jeans once and throw them in the wash or anything, but I reckon we probably do more than two washes a week - probably something like 7, maybe even 8, over 6 weeks.

I'd love a comparison, so how much do you do?
