How many loads of washing a week?

  • I am wondering why I feel so well in the face of all this latest scare-mongering. I live alone, my sheets and duvet cover get washed at least every two to three weeks, large load of towels a fortnight, one load of white and one darks a fortnight. Average three loads a fortnight. I do have a very large machine (from the days when the teenagers washed their hoodies daily) but I use little detergent and no conditioner. My OH who washes his own clothes in his own machine sometimes smells OVERWHELMINGLY of soap powder and he thinks he is getting rhinitis because of house mites. I'd say it was an allergy to the very strong perfumes in the soap powder, which obviously is not getting rinsed well enough.

I'd just like to add -re that article - that washing at 60 degrees C is NOT going to kill norovirus like they imply - you'd need either strong bleach or an autoclave to treat it with steam at 121 degrees C and under 15 atmospheres pressure!:rotfl:

When I was a student and stoney broke I didn't use the launderette for two years, except if I was on a holiday. I washed everything by hand, as did my flatmates. We used to throw all the bedding into the bath and leap around on top of it like we were treading grapes. We used the water one of us had just bathed in plus some extra detergent, and rinsed in cold. We would wring the wet stuff out between two of us and drip dry out the back windowm then over the bannisters. We washed the rest of our clothes out individually, every second night in turns, in the kitchen sink. It got the clothes as clean as a washing machine...in some ways better because you can scrubb out marks individually. We did have an old washboard though! Then someone's mum gave us an old fashioned spinner and that was great because it spun all the water out.
I do wash by hand but dont feel that this gets clothes absolutely clean every single time as obviously it doesnt get down to the inners of the fabric as well as a machine.powder residue is also and issues as is drying clothes in enough time.Work uniform tops have to be washed after every shift due to company not using aircon to save money which makes heavy work and rushing about lead to unclean tops every shift- days off so infrequent that I often have to wear damp clothing as it hasnt had enough time to line dry over bath between shifts.(we dont have radiators)Also marks dont often come out. (have had a small porridge caused mark on one top which is still there after 4 hand washes and a LOT of scrubbing.:( )

We do about three loads a week. Have to wash OH work clothes separately as he works with industrial dyes, colours and bleaches- made the mistake of adding my favourite uni hoody to that was once and now it has a bleachy patch on it :( There's just me and him, but we don't tend to do everything in the basket, quite often there's a jumper or two that's held over until the next week.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time
  • There are 4 of us and we do 7-9 loads a week which includes weekly bedding change and towels. We have a 9kg washing machine. Mainly its hung out or we will use the tumble drier for heavier items if wet outside.

two-three times a week, one for colours and one for whites and if anything is left over that gets washed but i have to do them on seperate days as no tumble dryer only clothes horse, so mon-wed-fri, friday is normally uniform washing day so i save all my colour/darks for this day so its dry for sunday. :)

Have you ever thought of using indoor weight sleeping bags for the bedwetters? They are polyester filled and you don't need liners for them so you'd just be washing a bag plus bottom sheet each time rather than duvet, duvet cover and bottom sheet. A duvet is bulky so you'd presumably be washing them individually wheras you'd get two of the bags in at once. Also, they won't disintegrate with repeated washings like duvets will. Also sleeping bags are warmer in winter because no drafty edges. Most kids like them too!

That's a good idea. Thanks for that. I'll seriously consider it.

Tesco Online has most of its sleeping bags reduced by 75% off atm. Might be worth a look. If the kids are under 6/7, you could get away with Junior ones. Plain square ones with no hood are the best for indoors and you can usually open them up to use as top quilts later on.
