I have a 9kg drum and do 2 loads each day without fail. If I have bedding to wash that is extra so I can have 4 washes in a day. We have 2 kids. I would love to do less washing, its the drying that gets me especially this time of year. We have two airers that have clothes on them permanently, when they are full the dryer goes on. I try and use the dryer for finishing the clothes that have been on the airers to make way for a new load. I wish we could afford to use the dryer more - I hate wet washing in the house.

Ok, serious question here for ladies who to 1-2 washes a day, every day. What do you find to wash?

For example, yesterday I wore leggings, knickers, bra and top, OH wore a T-shirt and a pair of joggers, DD wore a skirt T-shirt, tights, vest, knickers and cardie, the boys wore T-shirts, jeans and one hoodie and one jumper. Out of that all that would need to be washed today is my leggings, my top & u/wear, DD's skirt u/wear & t-shirt, OH's t-shirt & joggers, boys t-shirts & pants. Nowhere near a full load.

Obviously with littlies they need to put all thier clothes in the was, but the clothes are smaller, but we all recycle jeans, jumpers, cardies etc for 2-3 wears. I think mine would run out of clothes if they put everything in the wash after just one wear :D

I do a load every day and don't I just know it if I have a day off from it as the washing pile is huge! Got myself, my husband, our 2 kids and a Jack Russell (whose bedding I have to wash or it gets pongy). I don't have a tumble dryer; just hang everything up and put it on our wooden airer which goes above the stairs. I couldn't be without it! I try to iron 2-3 times a week to keep on top of it but fail miserably :o.

  • I do at least one load everyday.

    2 darks,
    1 whites
    2 colours
    1 bedding
    1 towels

And then DP goes to the gym 3 times a week. Due to the sweat in his clothes, they need washing when he gets in (and to be dry again for when he needs them)

The baby... well at 7 months old she still has reflux (is on meds) and we can easily change her and my clothes 2 or 3 times a day which creates more washing.

DD 5, will wear her pj's for 2 nights before putting in the wash and so will i.

I used to be terrible for wearing my clothes once and then putting them in the wash but i had so much washing it was getting ridiculous. Things like jumpers, i am only wearing outside and taking off when i get in, so they are not dirty and can have a couple more wears. I have a small pile of things in my bedroom of things to wear again, as i dont want to wear the same thing 3 days in a row
  • Only 2 of us and one dog. Washing machine is small, only 5kg drum. I do a load nearly every morning on cheap rate electricity but mostly use the economy wash which lasts 30 mins on 15degree wash and everything comes out clean.

Dog washing goes on a 60degree wash every couple of weeks and sometimes hubby comes home with oily clothes which go on a 60degree wash too.

I've got a wash bag that the dog stuff goes in to stop hair staying in machine so no need to run rinse program after, bought it off ebay for a fiver and it's well earnt it's money, though probably could make one for a lot less but didn't have a sewing machine when I bought it.

I am shocked how many loads some people are doing! Currently I haven't got a drier (considering one maybe), but if I did load a day I would definitely get one, over my OH's protests on where do we put it.

There is only 2 of us, no pets. I do 2, sometimes 3 loads a week. Usually at the weekend.
OH wears suits (so dry cleaning) and his shirts I stick in with bedding on 60C. One load of darks and one loads of another lights that don't go on 60C - these are not regular, as it depends when the load is full. Towels usually go with one of the these loads.

Then extra load for hand wash here and there.

Though my washing machine is 7kg - I think that I would never buy 5kg machine again. It was either too full or too empty all the time, 7kg is ideal for weekly wash of each load.
  • I can't believe the volume of washes some people do

Me neither - since DD has gone to Uni, we're down to 2 or 3 loads a week for me, DH and DS 16yo :)

I'll add this to the existing thread to keep ideas together.

  • Oh my goodness, I wish I could get away with only doing a few loads of washing a day!!

I'm catching up at the moment (been a bit lazy of late :o) and have done 10 this weekend alone, with probably the same again before next weekend.

Ideally I'm aiming to be in a position to do one load per day, which I think quite reasonable as there's me (fresh work clothes each day), DH (manual work - new top each day), DD (clean shirt each day), DS (messy 3 pre-schooler) and a rather large dog (who has a penchant for jumping in the local stream , hence a smelly bed).

    MMM :)

yesterday I wore yard clothes am, then changed in to clean clothes, then yard clothes again PM (same ones as the mornign) then pjs. The yard clothes are now in the washing pile. The jeans and jumper I wore yesterday I'm wearing again today, but clean t shirt, vest and underwear and socks. Plus I wore yard clothes this morning which I'll wear again tonight.

I was jeans as infrequently as possible, and jumpers only when needed.

I get through between 4 and 14 changed of yard clothes a week (depnding on weather). I wear 2-3 pairs of pjs a week (I tend to wear these not for sleeping in but in the evenings home alone). Then nicer clothes...whether smartish or relaxed clothes for going out of the house or staying in but notwanting to wear work clothes in the house IYSWIM.

Just me and the family dog - which sits with me on the sofa so I also have throws to wash. Since the washing machine gave up the ghost I've been stuck with the launderette. I go there once a fortnight. Two wash loads but one of them is in the big washer and the other in the standard washer. Would probably equate at least 3 domestic loads.
I also hand wash delicates - or if I get desperate in between visits.
That said, since retiring I don't go through half the clothes I used to.
Would love another washing machine but I'm worried about getting the filter clogged with dog hair. Used to be able to use laundry facilities at previous job and the commercial machines there seemed to manage without filters and it was fine.
