1899, 18185 and 18866 have never carried calls to 0871 numbers!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Ther are still companies pretending to offer calls at a lowish rate, according to the International call checker, and on their web sites.
But the reality is that they redirect you to more expensive numbers, having no doubt taken 10p or more of our money first.

I think that Ofcom should monitor these services.
    Yes, I agree that's devious.

Anyone coming across such a thing with a number in the Callcheckers, please post full details in THIS THREAD so that Callchecker Admin can be told (they'll then try to modify the nightly 'trawl' to remove the offending entry).

Cable landline users cannot use prefixes like 1899.

True, although the 1899 service is still working on Virgin via the freephone access number (or at least it was last time i tried it).

I have used 18185 for years & never had any problems. Bills are accurate & at 0.5p per minute to the USA with just a 4p connection fee (only charged if your call is answered) you can't go wrong.
Go ahead & set up an account & pay by direct debit so you are protected by the scheme, rather than on a credit card which is much riskier.

Just tried these three companies which I've not heard of before. In all cases I tried two numbers which failed to connect.

    1pminute
    4CheapCalling
    AbroadPhone

Upon using Bestminutes the call connected within 10 seconds of the initial 0844 call, which is what I'll be using from now. This is to report my feedback in case others have similar experiences with these companies.
