Busy on here today & I haven't been receiving email updates for some reason.

IMH, I won a distinction in elocution for reciting Silver by Walter de la Mare. What a bloody waste of money elocution lessons were. As soon as I stepped off stage, I went back to pronouncing school as a two-syllable word and water as "wother". My Boltonian mother has always had ideas above our station :)

We're contemplating alternative accommodation come May when we have to move out: static, yurt, camping pod or just live in a bit of the house. Or tent?!?! I'm loathe to spend money on something that is a depreciating asset or that won't generate any income via way of potential holiday rental in the future...

OH dreams about a woodburner, so we need to get that right. We seem to have the potential to generate a lot of free wood (although I have no idea, really). How many trees do you need to be self sufficient in wood? For those who've expressed a preference for wood burners, which makes do you love/hate?

Oh, and I think I accidentally pressed the Spam button for someone's post, so sorry about that if there are implications (using iPhone touchscreen and tandem feeding twins in bed inevitable leads to a malfunction!) off to sleep now as they've got colds and their response to illness is to seek comfort whenever they wake up twenty times a night - knackered!

ROZEE...... you can get static caravans/mobile homes that have no site for a pittance [here they are 1-2grand, maybe about 500£ to move it. if you put it in an unobvious place ,you could do what friends did...grow a hedge around it making a little garden area and then poss holiday let it to walkers when youve finished.. ??

You IMO, really need to work out when you are going to be living in alternative accommodation. If it's just going to be the summer, then a tent might do. A yurt is great and you can have a woodburner in the middle and it will see you through an Autumn, but I couldn't do a winter in one.

I think a woodburner is great and alot better than an open fire, an open fire does suck up all the air from around and sends it up the chimney, warm and cold, so your back can be freezing and your front melting.
I've lived with open fires and woodburners almost my whole life and I would go for the stove anytime.

How many trees would you need to be self sufficient in wood? I'm sure the real answer is in acres, but it depends (IMO) so much on the woodland, some woodland I can look at and know I can see 10 years wood without felling anything, some I can see that from year 2, I'm going to be having problems. It depends on the type of tree, the age and the amount already deadwooded on the ground.

I've been to see (some of ) a tree yesterday and it amounts to 2 years wood for us, if I get it, I'm sharing it with a neighbour, yet it's only 10% of the whole tree, the rest is still upright. It's massive, but takes up alot of space.
We might not get any more wood from that tree for another 30 years +

Is the woodland coppiced, has it been looked after? Tbh, I am far far from an expert on this, you have to use your common. And work out if you want to run your entire CH on wood, or just add to it.

Dave thank you for the asparagus details, the man was very helpful and recommended the most suitable type for my area and how many I would need. So as soon as I have pennies I will be ordering my crowns :D

Now I need to decide on the type of lavender and a suitable supplier as I am going to go for some mini plants and I can fill them out with seed grown plants.

Yes - sometimes you see those in the Pound Store too - They are actually very good if you get them when they come in & are still moist as no one attends to them once they're in the shop. Don't know if the weather's to be good to plant. Wind just really ratcheted up & hail hammering against the van. Will be drummed to sleep yet again.
