Branch breaking on poplar by ukmaggie45, on Flickr
Had a knock on the door earlier today, it was a chap from the University. He's keeping an eye on the poplar branches, their tree surgeon is very busy (hardly surprising!) just now. Since both major branches are leaning on the sycamore beside the poplar he thinks it is safe enough for now (I tend to agree though I don't know a lot about trees) but if it gets shifted to look unsafe by further winds he will get tree surgeon in more urgently. They hope to work on the tree on Monday (weather willing!) and will re-pollard it. Guess that's going to be the safest option, and now 2 large branches have come down probably the cheapest in the long term for the University.
I've worried about the poplar tree since we moved in, and wished they'd pol it again... But over the last couple of months I've come to love it, and will be sad to see it cut back so hard. I'll miss the sun showing up the haze of green alga on the trunks, and the pale buds waiting at the tops of the twigs and small branches. It will change the outlook from the back of our house incredibly much! Now if it was the sycamore being cut back I'd be a happy bunny!

I'm going to sow some chilli seeds and that's all atm. Chillies take so long to grow here, because it's so cold, I always mean to start them off now and never get round to it.
That's it you've done it now, I'll have to sow some tomorrow, can't have me lagging behind
I've overwintered a pretty in purple this year in addition to a few regular ones, it looked so pretty couldn't bring myself to compost it0 -
Wish the wind would blow the 2 massive sycamores down (safely away from the houses and towards the empty park/green bit when no one is in there!) that have turned my 3/4 of my little south facing garden into a woodland dapple shady thing , not good for growing food:(
I've learned my lesson *yes you may live here for 20 years instead of 2 as planned annie, remember small trees grow big!!!*0 -

My two plants I tried to overwinter have both died, really annoyed. Maybe that particular chilli doesn't like it.

I know
The bigger one I thought would make it has popped its clogs.
The little one dried out when I was away over Christmasbut still has a green stem and some green side shoots, so I am going to cut off the dried foliage and try and resurrect it.

I expect you can guess where I'm from by the bit of blurb under my avatar! (Well, about 8 miles West actually)

Well today was very odd. brilliant sunny afternoon, which followed 24 hours of lashing rain and very high winds. Woken repeatedly all night by stuff tumbling down the street and soaked three times getting to work.
Fortunately the only tree that keeled over landed one two others, taking a chunk off one of them. Even better it crashed parallel to the road rather than across it like the one last year (scary because there was a car under that one).
I am not going to get planting yet, except sweet peas. I want more daylight before I risk much and LE probably get 20 minutes more than me each end of the day.
Have too many free, gifted and bought pepper and chilli seeds so may try a few of them in the propagator in February even if they sulk for weeks afterwards. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
