The pink flowered chestnut was a later import.....about Victorian times, I think. Fruit is the same.
thsat's interesting. I wonder why no pionk ones were brought over originally...they were a Tradescant import weren't they?
there seem to be a couple of pink variations, whether its one ''type'' with slightly different expresssion I don't know, but there is an almost salmon/copper toned pink I love.0 -
SO do you think the dangly ones are sweet chestnuts ?? all the pics show the "fruit" sort of attached to the branch rather than dangling abot 6" from branch on the ones ive seen ??0

I found mine on the road in Autumn time, potted them up & they grew & I've got them out in the ground & they grow quick. Didn't cost me owt. I put sheep dung(well rotted) around them when I put them out in the ground.
Picked up a tipped over pot & flower spikes are poking out???? Can't remember what It is I planted but doubt owt should be shooting at this time. Note to self - label things!
Seem to be in a lull weather wise, but to come bad again tomorrow - so think we'll head out as it's so stressful when it's rocking an a rolling.0 -

The colour the tree (Sweet Chestnut) goes in Autumn is wonderful - stunning.0

If your dangly bits
are like long, golden-yellow, hairy caterpillars then they could be sweet chestnut, alfie.
Personally, I'd go with using the tank for water plants. You can always disguise the outside somehow if you want to. I wouldn't fill it with soil for planting - at some point the soil will need changing or refreshing & it's a b to do from something like a big tank.0 -
I'm not much into flower shows in general, but re the tank, Bunny Guiness had a dunking pool in her chelsea veg garden this year which I thought was a brilliant idea.....no need to wait for a watering gar to fill up, just dunk and pour.......of course, I mainly use a hose, rofl, but still like the idea0
