:o Thank you for welcoming me back! I have been away so long that I am a bit embarrassed popping back :o

Oh no I have just reread what I have written and you will all be wanting me to go as I am so doom and gloom :rotfl::rotfl:

Hello Rummer, nice to see you here again! :A
Don't you worry about being a 'Lapsed Daydreamer.' Just shout "Oi gerrofa moi laaand!" three times, run clockwise twice around the compost heap, and we'll forgive you. :rotfl:

I don't know about doom & gloom: when others' endeavours don't quite work out, that makes our own failures more bearable, I think.
For example, about 18 months ago when we started re-shaping the front drive & garden area, we put in nice machine-rounded poles with hessian rope as an informal boundary marker. We didn't know then that natural rope would rot inside the poles and break, or that Tesco would bash into the end pole while reversing into the neighbour's yard. Today, our tasteful entrance looks a lot less attractive!:(

There might have been a frost here last night, but by dawn it was just dull & grey. I am supposed to be digging more holes to expose the foundations....or rather improving the hole I've done because BiL says it's not good enough.....but a cuppa and a quick few minutes on-line never hurt anyone. :o

Rozee, I'll reply to your PM tonight. I am still shifting stuff off this computer before it expires, otherwise I'd have done that yesterday.

The last couple of days here have been really frosty in the mornings and bitter during the day. I don't think it will be long before we get snow!

oh, but if you put it in a bucket of water in the dark and cool they'll more than likely last until christmas now....so you can use it decoratively in the house...do you have somewhere with no light?

I think he already chopped it into small bits! :( We have places in cupboards with no light, but unfortunately not with no heat! The few no heat bits have spuds and garlic stored in them... Of course since it's got cold today maybe we could store in the loft, or will be able to next year - OH just got our builder back to quote for boarding it over. Bit difficult to do this year I suspect, but might talk to OH about the berried holly if any of it is worth trying to save.

Thanks LiR for your input!

I think it was about 8C outside today, but I was warm enough, digging. Inside, the woodburner didn't quite go out, so reasonably cosy.

We can shut half of the bungalow off, which is one of the few really helpful & practical aspects of the place. Last week there were 4 of us and now there's only me, so just 3 rooms being used.

Because 'the man' comes to service and light the Aga this week, you can probably bank on some unseasonal sub-tropical weather for mid November. We argue about this, but I feel we're still a bit early for expensive 24/7 heat.

No real news on the foundations yet, but one end of the house is looking good and the original bit is deeper than expected. I'm down 3' and I haven't found the footings on that side yet. I hope there are some....

On my last house, the foundations ended roughly 10"-12" below ground level!

Our home (old home, not this new one) had subsidence, foundations more or less non existant, just on a bed of ash. But it only started moving after the earthquake in north west of england in 198? or was it 199? ? We have big crack down side, but that's from bomb damage from WWII from when there was an incendiary bomb down the side road from us. It blew out all the windows from the local primary school too, the one my kids went to, about a 5-10mins walk away.

But the subsidence will obviously make it harder to sell home. At least on the plus side we have insurance in place, and it will get passed on, but it will sure as s*** put off a lot of folks even though we have all of the paperwork for the remedial work. Ah well, life happens!
