I think it's only Kaz & Maggie who are near the finish line with houses.
We're a bit on hold at the mo as need to move furniture from home so we can try and sell it. Outta cash mostly and so no curtains other than what needed for security. We have blinds on all of the front windows - cheapest way for privacy, but also with the SW aspect needed in summer to give us some shade (well, if we ever got any sun we'd need them!). Hoping to get curtains in the front half of living room maybe before Xmas if lawyer gets the Parental Estates finished off - it's over 4 years now, and is really doing me head in for a number of reasons.
But we're in the house, and OH has been working hard on the garden when he can.
I seem to have been vegetating for ages now, the tooth/gum abscess really took it out of me, and the antibiotics seem to have f***ed my guts too... Plus having to try and squirt topical antibiotic gel between tooth and gum twice a day is a pain and I'm pretty sure I'm not managing to get it into the right place as it's very awkward.
HOwever I just want to recommend the Martin Scorcese film about George Harrison that is showing over Saturday and Sunday nights on BBC2. We went to the Liverpool premiere at Fact, and liked it so much we went back a week later to see it again on the big screen with great sound! Anyone who was around in the 60s will love it! Or anyone who was into the Beatles. At least they're doing it over 2 evenings on the tele - we sat through the whole thing in one go (though with an intermission) which was almost 4 hours!0 -
:eek::eek:Rant Alert!:eek::eek:
I saw this amazingly silly thing in a Smallholder's magazine today, so I thought I'd share it with you:
Yup, it's a cover for your chicken coop and a snip at £190.
So, first of all, you go on the Interweb and order one of those flimsy Chinese chicken houses for about £120.
Next, having assembled said chicken house, you put it out in some weather and it begins to warp a bit. This is OK until there is a real storm, after which you find the coop has leaked and the bedding's all wet.:(
Never mind though. Remember, for only £190 you can protect your coop with a special cover.:)
So, for a total outlay of around £300, you now have a rubbishy coop and the pleasure of grovelling about on the floor to reach it, unless of course you're a gnome. If you are, maybe your gnomish children could also use it as a slide....0 -

Whoa! Not so fast! :eek:
As a smallholder, the first thing you learn to do is recycle stuff; not just your own, but other people's too.
Of course there's always more stuff than one can possibly cope with all at once, which is where those agricultural buildings come in. So, you may not think you need a clearspan barn at the moment, but......;)
On a more serious level, don't forget to budget for an outbuilding, plus a few sheds for your goats, chickens, geese etc.
The other thing you may also have to decide, is whether to move in and re-model the place later, based on the experience of living in it, or stay in rented and get the builder/architect in right away. Not an easy one!
Cheapest option is probably move in, build the barn, move out into a mobile home on site, put non-delicate stuff in barn, do the rebuild, then pray the council forget about the mobile home! :rotfl:0 -

When we moved recently we had a garage full of stuff before we even started clearing ten years of living detritis in the house itself... I've kept the baths I reclaimed from a hotel that was being turned into apartments, they make for great raised beds, and the clearing outs of pens from a cattery that was closing down to adapt as chicken coops. Where ever we buy it has to have storage inside because we have so much stuff with the children (I am a seasoned car booter...) but I had forgotten the issue of outdoor storage.
Apparently, you can have one "free" mobile home without planning permission in Pembs or Ceredigion. I think it's more likely to be a Shepherd's Hut or Yurt than a typical caravan. I feel the same way about them as I do about bungalows :rotfl:0 -
