we bought a full structural survey for this place, and I'd not do that again. It was so airy fairy and non commital and having looked at a few others with a wiser head now for an old property I'd instead do what we then did: get a survey instead by a structural engineer and then surveys as required by electrical engineer etc.
The structural engineers survey seems to me to actually mean something. I love our SE, he's very serious and sweet and I feel he acts as an advocate for the house (he loves period houses and was on a grand designs project) and while he's very quiet compared to our architect (through whom I have all of this stuff done...I'm paying the dog so I shan't bark too) I find what he says to be of worth and substance. Coincidentally, he also recommended by favourite of the building teams we've met with who came to do the temporary winter fix here.
good luck with the two tomorrow!0 -
Found a dead chicken this morning - one of the two Scot's Grey females that I was keeping & this one was perfect - a real cracker. She mustn't of gone in last night. There wasn't a blemish on her - no tell-tale two holes in the neck. one eye was opened & milky opaque - like she's had a knock on th ehead. V windy last night - maybe she's roosted in a tree & been blown into the truck - that's all I can think. What a waste.

rats and rats. Given how few good SGs there are, what a pity. I still think there is a fatal sex-linked genetic mutation somewhere; it is the only reason that I can think of for the very low rate of female hatchings and the poor state of many of the females. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
LIR.... iv PM'd you but you are so popular it cannot weedle its way into your "inbox"0

I don't know - Mine are very hardy & I generally get just over 50% females in a hatching. They are not penned & all have been really healthy - especailly in comparison with the Orps that seem much softer, more prone to disease & dropping dead from heart failure - I believe.
The milky eye....mmmmmmmm - have seen this before & that was when a roost pole gave way & found a dead hen with that.0 -
i learnt a mystery today...i will try to explain but cant give too many details....bear with me !!
in the 1920s a family story started re a "special item" that was aquired somewhat illegally. it was then panic mode and it was buried in the family garden.and no body knew bar the person involved. fast forward to the 40s when on his soon to be demise he told his daughter.. she and her husband thought him doolally but in the late 4os she apparently dug "in the spot" and found said item, panicked and reburied it. in the 70s she repeated story to a nephew on her soon to be demise.... he took her into the garden to show him where it was, only to find a gnarled old apple tree there. he thought her doolally !!
fast forward to 2 weeks ago when "nephews " son was reading a book that mentioned the "missing " item !!! they googled the house and found it had a large manicured lawn now !! NOW what to do ?? has "it" long been dug up,disturbed, chucked or is it still there ?? the family were discussing buying the house to dig up the garden,if no find then sell the house [resell anyway] they cant knock the door as the now owners could prove difficult if THEY find it but say they havent ....
why the palavour? well lets just say its a fairly important item....:D
so my dears ...what would you do, bearing in mind this item cannot be common knowledge until it is/is not found !!:D0 -

Ooh, it's busy and interesting on here tonight. I doubt I'll have long to type, all children asleep but that's unlikely to be for long - teething!
Thanks for all the well wishes for tomorrow. It feels like Christmas Eve. I've decided I'm going to get really excited. Better to be excited and let down than not excited at all
I'm sorry to hear about the chicken. However, even talk of dead chicken (god rest her soul, as my father would say) has me getting carried away thinking about how we could have our chickens if we bought either of these places... And geese!!! Geese and goats! And maybe some cows.... (Sometimes fantasy/daydream is less problematic than reality :rotfl:I'm great at day dreaming, I live in my head a lot!)
The mystery sounds fascinating. Very secret squirrel!
Anyway, off to bed now. Although, I might have one last look at those online property particulars....0
