Believe it or not you aint allowed open fires in new builds here now!

Morso do nice enamelled stoves or they used to. I have an old stove now - was hand made for me & it's basically an oblong box on legs & I love it coz I can cook on it & have water heating on it & it burns rotten wood, ole fence posts, slab wood, dead twigs & secret paper work &.......& the cats love it & I don't think we'd a survived the last Winters without it.

The Petit Godin is perfectly efficient.* My FiL has had one in his cottage since the 1980s. When gas came to the village around the millennium, he converted it.

*Might not be the same internally as original models though.

    grand designs ch 4 9pm :)

It was one of the better ones, except the guy who was self-building was just so laid back and confident, he made me feel very inadequate! :(

Lir, I'd love to help but havent seen any on travels so would need to try the internet. I see there are quite a few modern stoves that are enamelled, and quite a few art deco for sale, but it seems as if you have trade off between style and efficiency. Me, I go for modern efficiency and ease of simple metal finish, but then I like artex ceilings too :o

Not eagle eyed atm, under doc's orders again, 3 day semi-starvation diet and 2 lots of antibiotics :(

    Happy stoves

rhiwfield - have you got the trots.......or rather the gallops - I have that the other week - like a gastric flu thing - pretty grotty. Hope you get well soon & drink loads of water as it's very dehydrating.

No, bit more serious than that, though thats bad enough at the time!!

Decided to have a short break by the seaside to recharge batteries in a couple of weeks, long beach walks, cheddar gorge, glastonbury :)

Was in two minds about grand designs last night. Admiring of the effort on the one hand, amazed at the guy's laid back attitude, and couldnt help but think the south facing (?) window wall would create an unbearable heat trap in summer, much preferred Ben Laws' house.

On the stoves front, I've got a hunter herald 14 arriving next week for my open plan area, they're british made and get a great name. Only planning stipulation that goes with mine is that I have to have a twin walled flue, not a biggie though tbh, but it would be nice to get the use of some of that heat rising up it.

Let's hope the break does the trick; we always took our holiday in late October/Nov half term and the weather rarely let us down. :)

I didn't see the Grand Designs chap's smallholding set-up, but I missed a few minutes near the beginning. Anyway, it looked like his wife ran much of that. I wasn't sure about the house, clever though it was; from a distance, it just looked like something a Hobbit on steroids might have made.

Anyway, I'm glad lir brought up wood burners, as it set me looking around the web sites, and I learned that we've been running ours all wrong! :o

    rhiwfield....please take care!

dave thanks for the info about the godin....I've seen quite a few of them. I hate our woodburner in the sitting room (clearview). I find it cantankerous and rather ugly...I'm afraid I think a lot of the modern ones are not to my taste, though some I accept I like with other peoples taste in mind.

The clearview, like choille's burner, wins respect for at least being here and sort of working!

Godins have quite a cult following; there's lots of chat on the net about them. I don't think it's just about the looks because they do seem efficient, and of course there's a hot plate in the top for that kettle/coffee pot. :)
