OK Fruit trees - plant bare rooted ones from leaf fall to March as long as the ground is frost free, the earlier the better assuming we do not get a frightful December like last year. Planting early allows the roots to develop before they are challenged by the drier weather when the leaves are out. Do you have running water? If so, can you water the trees occasionally - a large bucket once a month during a very dry spell makes a huge difference in the first year?
Trees cost - any apples not in the supermarket range are £10 - 15 per tree. The other option would be to plant root stocks this autumn and get someone to help you graft them in the spring (cost 70p - £2 per rootstock. Anyway you can always re-graft any you miss or that do not take the following year. I taught some folks how to do this in March and they have lost one graft out of 120 trees.
See http://www.frankpmatthews.com/fruitrootstocks.htm for info.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
After August 2011 to March 2012 you are eligible for the renewable heat premium payment but this doesnt guarantee you'll receive the RHI (the large biomass RHI for non domestic has just been delayed as the EU considered the terms too favourable).
I'm unsure whether the govt will have either the will or the funding to introduce a domestic RHI next year, one of the reasons I've put the idea on the back burner here
we might get a system for the business too. so, one set of payments at least.0 -
Wow, best of luck CTC!
