Greetings, oldtractor and a big hello to anyone reading this thread for the first time. :)

I can see I'm going to be Googling 'transpired wall collector,' but here's another one intending to make a woodburner the core of household heating, much as we do now. What else I can't say yet, because we're still undecided about other basics, like the way the house will be extended. Although we've been told we can't afford any upstairs, we aren't accepting that, just yet. ;)

The good news is that, with perseverence, a club hammer and some friendly local 'ballast,' we finally got the polytunnel side rails down to where they were before it was covered. The cover is now like the proverbial drum, the end rails are horizontal and we've finished off the end panels. Now, we're adding the extra woodwork to the sides that will take the variable ventilation panels. Some of that has been a bit difficult, because it's our design from here onwards. :o

Looks like tomorrow will be the last chance for us to get the tunnel sides done, as there are some south-westerlies on the way. Like you lotus, I took the decision to harvest my squash too, because although there are no frosts around, they'd stopped growing.

Aren't there any summer lets that would welcome your family for the next 6 months, rozee? I suppose many will have the odd bookings, especially around Christmas time. We used to hire a 5* one in Oct/Nov, and with free ch, it was silly money for a week away. :)

Fruit, for lir: apples, pears, plums, damsons, filberts, sloes, medlars, strawberries, blackcurrants and goosegogs just about covers it, but we also have a walnut in a very silly place with 4 nuts on it. Some of our fruit is 'transitional,' which means we dug it up, took cuttings and we're growing new plants on. Others, like the raspberries, we're trying to kill off, to plant newer, better ones.

    You mean this?

Hmmmmm.....I'd like just one of their glasshouses.:)

I think the rest might be a bit difficult for DW and me to run on our own. :(

In the same way as I don't look at posh cars, I've never looked at properties way above our budget, so I don't know what's available.
I get the impression that the higher the price, the better the value, up to a point, and then the law if diminishing returns kicks-in, or the maintenance looks horrendous, or both.

If I could have a bit of luxury, I know what I'd have though; it would be my own bit of fishing. I had that as a lad, more or less, and if I got the chance near here, I'd have it again. There's a bit near Pete's farm for sale at present, for £45k. That wouldn't interest me, being back in the posh car league, but I'd go to £10k for a decent length of our smaller river....... and explain to DW later! :o

    Too much for me :(

And you'd be buying someone else's dream, reading this thread it seems half the challenge, and the enjoyment, is building the dream.

    Impressive though!

well, I'm like alfie....I look at the big dreams too, the posh cars and the 45k plots of river. I just know I can't afford them.

Our bit of dream, however is quite exhausting enough these days, even when no progress is being made, lol.

Totally agree with that, I do look at houses and plots above what we can afford and you seem to get more for your money, than if you consider what they would be worth split up.

I just hope I win the premium bonds :D

(I could live in one of those glasshouses :rotfl:)

    hi all.
that greenhouse plot is amazing value for round here..its only 2 miles from me and iv never seen it !! im going for a mooch to see where it is.... shame but id use those greenhouses for a totally different use... too many competing nurseries round here im afraid.
IN MY DREAM.... id have chooks [ imagine a big straw bale construction inside with outside access, breeding varieties and selling eggs, good ventilation etc] and pond fish [koi and goldfish] in another glass house and a pets one ie rabbits and guineau pigs that people can enjoy walking round and a bird one....
probably totally impractacle but you must know me by now !!!! my greenhouse chooks are so happy and healthy[they do have a parasol umbrella rigged up over one of the shelves and they sit there at night !] ,they love it in there and IF i was to win the lottery thats what id do ! a huge animal complex and id belike a pig in s**t !

I saw lots of mushrooms in a very brief dog walk today and this evening feels beautifully autumnal :)

I guess I really should bring in the big pumkin off the veg patch if its gonna be wet. :(

Has anyone ever made marrow jack o lanterns? I thought I might make a little display of gruesome squash :)

Hi everyone, I will have 9 large plots [30ft x6ft] and 3 large triangular plots to plant up in the spring. What would you grow? Is there anything that is particually disappointing>?
