Am I the only person in the UK to have had a bad plum crop
Ah well, DS1's car was sold yesterday so lots of wonderful space on the drive
And just stacked the last of the winter wood, weather's giving me that hunkering down feeling.
Listed a woven silk and an old watercolour on Ebay, quite a few watchers on both already. Keep on thinking I can see painter's initials on watercolour, then I tell myself its imagination. But its pretty good quality anyhow so hopefully it'll get bid up.
Oh ho, time to bubblewrap another window.
there is a programme on tv ( think its finished now) about old paintings, showing how to see if they are fakes or not..
and they were using a similar sort of light to the ones they use for identifying fake £20 notes in shops...
flip i can t remeber the name of the show now, as i could have given you a link to it on metube, so you could see how they do itWork to live= not live to work0 -
sorry, I've been very distracted latley by a looooooooooong thread on another board.
Planning meeting went EXCELLENTLY!we should know in 3 weeks.
There were some comedy moments. The guy hadn't read the application obviously, and was going to bluff it.We subtley made sure that didn't happen so that any comeback can be said..WE were open and driving a line of full open discussion. Also, the dicey bit seems to have been resolves, dicey bit number 2 turns out not to be a dicey bit at all, no queries raised and then something else....where we want to put a sytair case the listed buildings guy was ...''no, this ceiling is in amzing condition and can't be lost by opening up''...''um'' we said ''um, its ....plaster board not lathe!'' to which he had no choice but to realise he'd made a bit of an error and say, ''oh right, yes, fine then!''
Other news: one of my chickens disappeared earlier in the year, and I thought she'd been got, but saw her recently, and she's gone feral. She's been back the last two days, looking a bit cross and small but safe and sound. She's not coming in at night but is home for breakfast. My guess is she's tried having chicks somewhere and failed.
Alfie..how is old lady? Its possibly partly stress of what's going on, thats why the ''coincidence''.0 -

And apples and pears and peaches.
A lot of trees have been very badly damaged; whole branches breaking off under the weight of fruit. On the plots one small apple tree has split straight down the middle of the main trunk to within inches of the ground. A plum and an apple tree have both lost the top two thirds of the tree, the main trunk snapping in two about half way down taking all the top growth with it and an overgrown ex-cordon lost over half it growth when the main side branch tore off. That is just the ones I have seen. Elsewhere branches are propped up to try and reduce the risk of breakages.
Given what I have seen over the last 15 years, I think what has happened the last two years is that the very cold winter weather has increased the blossom production because of the increased vernalisation. I noted reduced blossom production after the warmer winters we had previously, and then increase after the last two winters.
Unless the blossom then flowers during a period of frost (or when the new fruitlets are vulnerable), the crop is huge.
I am trying to encourage people to reduce fruit crops be thinning if they can reach the branches, as there is a risk that the trees will be pushed to become biennial bearing.
Mind you, I thought that was a risk after last year's bumper crops. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

LIR... old lady still in hospital, had another episode so more tests. she actually doesnt know of "other",as few do, so no stress reason on that part.iv been going in to fuss/feed the cat ! i feel exhausted but also feel LUCKY so not complaining.....
glad you got a positive response re your planning anyway.sad news is nelly no kneck has demised ! she was always a tad weak thats why i kept her [others are ruling the waves at friends] i was really sad as i really liked her.....
had a call today from someone looking for some plants/weed for thier pond so they came round T time and she was amazed at my garden or rather how well things were growing [my head did swell i must admit !!] so she went off with some plants and cuttings aswell...
this afternoon i used my "fish" voucher i got for my birthday. they were those garrarufa fish that feed on your feet ! or rather the dead bits on your feet ..... it was fabulous !! tickled to start but was like having your feet in a jet stream of bubbles. then had a lovely foot massage... felt i needed a bit of TLC.
i cleaned out my chooks this morning and WAS going to resettle the greenhouse chooks into a new pen but they do look SO happy in there !! and feel im turfing them out into a harsh climate in comparison so me finks they may stay.....0 -

Anyhow, make a sig out of this
Claude Monet?
Friends coming today, just passing through on their way to the 'sunny' south coast. It's great to see folk, but we seem to have had a succession of visitors lately, plus lots of small 'events' which, with the weather, make everything feel as if its standing still, or even going backwards. Far too many weeds out there, and the grass.....:(
Had a lovely (cheap) meal out last night in a localish pub. At last we've found somewhere where even the plain food is real: i.e. real home -made chips, proper onion rings and steaks that aren't measured in ounces, but just won't fit on the plate!
We're having an African night in the village shortly. I won't say too much about that, but let's hope the warm winds are still around then, as my 'outfit' doesn't afford much protection from the elements.....:rotfl:0
