ooo is it goose friday? good luck with the geese LIR.... maybe some pics would be nice:D
well last night in the first time in years we went out for some 'posh nosh' the youngest didnt come with us, ( felt a bit guilty) we went to one of of the well known local places
I knew i shouldnt have had the starter:rotfl: i 'forced' myself to eat most of my main meal, but then the sweet tooth kicked in and we had to have a desert:cool::D
I had a smoked salmon and prawn thing ( basically prawn cocktail with smoked salmon) Then i had a lovely sirlion steak, which was like butter, just melting in the mouth.....mmmmmmmmm and hten we had a berry and lemon torte with cream....hubby had the 20oz T bone steak, and eldest had the fish
I am still full up...lol....
Still raining heavy here.... think there might be some floods over the next few days....Work to live= not live to work0 -
......hubby had the 20oz T bone streak..
Not raining here ATM, but it has been horribly windy with some very sharp showers. In between, I've been digging out the rest of the polytunnel foundations. Almost done now, so one last push today and they'll be ready for the final concreting-in. Then the fun really starts....:)
Please tell me it will be just like making stuff with Meccano!0 -
Alfie, self-seeded hollyhocks often seem happiest, probably because they get to choose where they want to be.
I've had some amazing variations from my 'experimental' dahlia seedlings this year, considering all the seeds came from one plant. I'll be keeping two, and when I've photographed them, I'll put them up here.
The hen saga entered a new phase yesterday when I sent the breeders our demand for refund + vet's bill by recorded delivery. They probably won't do anything, so in two weeks it will escalate and get more expensive for whoever loses. It's so silly, because we were originally sympathetic and would have split the cost with them.....if we'd been offered anything at all.
Meanwhile, our eagle-eyed friend spotted that one of the vendors had posted a query about a hen with a 'mystery disease' on a poultry web-site, using my photo of the sick bird. Of course, other members asked questions, trying to help, but she seems to have fallen silent.....So it's clear she genuinely believes the bird picked-up something extra here. Well, you can believe the Earth is flat....etc etc.
Anyway, the two poorly birds are definitely out of the woods, but the vet and the guy from the animal health lab both say don't incorporate them with the flock for some time, like a month to 6 weeks. They won't need separate quarters, but will always be carriers, so no breeding, and there's always the chance that they'll get a recurrence or go down to something else.
So that's our isolation pen out of action for now, which means we can't buy any of the hens our friend hatched either.
That friend, who has fertile eggs from the same source, awaits their hatching.....fingers crossed.0 -

CTC would this be of any use to you? http://www.ecologicalland.coop/
Click on the Greenham Reach Smallholdings (on the right hand side) to see the info.
This may be too soon for you to take up, but it looks like an ongoing thing judging from their 'mission statement'. Might be worth you keeping an eye on the site?

Rhiwfield.... hope you are on the mend with your back..... was just wondering if i get my mitts on a load of old pallets would you want some? as we got vans I could quite easily go out for a jolly up your way, and drop them off... We are going to start scouting round for wood ready for the winter, we have some stored, but going by last winter,,, we are going to see if we can really stock pile pallets/wood, even if i got to make room in work for it:D
Cheers CTC, slowly improving.
Our woodburner can take unpainted/untreated pallets, so if you've got any going spareGot a few herbs that you might like (horseradish, mint, oregano, sage). PM me if you're coming by.
Garden is beginning to look a mess, blight has hit the potatos and got to some of the tubers . All my fault for *!$*^&%!!! my back. DW took off all foliage and hoping back improves so I can lift whats left.
Went to an auction and came back with about 50 paintings/prints/mirrors. Will start listing tonight on Ebay and hope to get to a car boot Sunday if the weather perks up, really missed the last two good weather Sundays.
One of the paintings, a chalk drawing, is of a naval rating probably WW1, I'm guessing it was the picture he gave to his parents before sailing. Backing paper had almost disintegrated but an interesting fragment left had some info that I've contacted a NW museum about. Curious that events almost 100 years ago can still play with the emotions0 -
My sympathies, rhiwfield, for the back and the spuds.
Yesterday the leaves on our experimental early toms looked a bit suspect, so I whipped the lower ones off. Still not sure if it was the dreaded blight - after all, they've never been outside, but rain does sometimes blow through the tunnel doorway.
So many of us have dodgy backs or limbs! With me it's knees, but I managed to finish the polytunnel holes on what turned out to be a reasonable day. There's something nasty moving in from the west as I type though, so maybe that'll be the hens 'encouraged' to go to bed in a minute!
Speaking of hens, the vet rang today to tell me the chicken breeders had been quizzing her, as I'd enclosed a copy of her bill with my 'final demand' letter. They must be weighing up their options. Acknowledging they'd sold some under-the-weather hens would be a start. Doubly frustrating, as I'm sure the blood line is as good as they said.
Our broody Vorwerk did something odd last night. Having turfed it out at 6pm, and with the prospect of no more eggs, we closed the pop-hole on it, so it had to stay out. Discovering this, it threw a real wobbly and careered towards a couple of Welsummers, pecking at them wildly. Then, it sat down on its own and started preening, equally wildly, but the noise it made was like a dog shaking a stick and growling. I left it to it. Ten minutes later, it was still there growling and preening intermittently. I think you could call it all a proper temper tantrum! :rotfl:0
