:D I got to spend the afternoon in the garden :D
It was so good to get out and get stuck in! I cleared up lots of debris that had blown in due to the bad weather and I emptied all the random buckets we seemed to have around the place, and put them in a pile. It is amazing the difference you can make by tidying things up! Still have piles of weeds and roots lying about the place I think I will need to take them to the dump as they can't go in the compost bins here and the council one is full.

Near the pond the whole path was covered in creeping buttercups  so I spent ages pulling them out, did I mention I hate those things! That and a number of weeds had grown through the weed control fabric. I planted up a number of pots with salad leaves and got some shallots planted out. Also got a few pots planted up with flowers and another area weeded :).

I have decided to get rid of a number of the plastic pots that we have around the garden. Many of them are flower buckets from Morrisons and troughs/pots we have been given. They were good at the time but I want my garden to look a bit more polished so I am going to put them on freecycle and get ceramic ones as and when I can afford them.

Rhiwfield after seeing the pic of your garden with the layout of raised beds it has confirmed it to me that I want a similar design for my side garden. My OH has been resistant to it up until now however it is clear that I am the one doing all the work in the garden so my layout it is ;)

Hope you all had a productive day :D

Certainly did thankyou, went to see the lady who sorts out my back this morning, so gave it a run in by working on the garden the rest of the day. No tired problems and no back problems, brilliant.

Got my parsnips sowed, my golden mangetout and giant bijou mangetout from real seeds sown, built frame for said mangetout. Are we going to be sick of mangetout, got oregon sugersnap in as well.

Finished putting out all the previous years leaf compost, the greenhouse is now ready for toms to be planted. (not yet, the mild weather isn't fooling me ;))

Saw a million other things that need to be done, but I'm just happy that this warm weather has meant I caught up a bit. :)

Hmm, I had a so-so day. indifferent0004.gif Started in the polytunnel sowing seeds, pricking out etc, then returned some tools I'd borrowed, visited the local garden centre where I bought a few more seeds and checked plant prices.... then did some real work!

I used the brushcutter to cut the grass around the garden, then DW asked me to do the chicken orchard, which I did. The hens weren't that bothered; they seemed to have remembered that I dig stuff up for them with that thing! Was nearly done, when I put the cutter through the chicken wire fence, so had to do a repair. Luckily, even Nylsaw won't go through the sheep fencing.

What do others do about the bit around the base of chicken run fences and similar? On one side we shall have a hay field, so the grass there is going to be pretty long. On the other side, the sheep will keep it trimmed shortly, so no worries there, I guess. Maybe I'm just a bit OCD about the whole thing! :o

Glad you're feeling better, lotus. I have no back or knee problems; just pain!
  • Hi everyone - haven't been here for a while as I've not had much time in the garden - now I've been made redundant can split time between job hunting and growing food.

All the plants that I picked up in Lidl and Morrisons are doing fantastically well. I've now got 3 apple trees a cherry tree 2 blackcurrants a redcurrant and a gooseberry - whole lot came to £20. I was on the verge of spending that on one fruit tree so am chuffed to bits.

Greenhouse is full of seedlings and I've actually run out of compost so need to pick up some more tomorrow. Any suggestions for cheap source of compost? Would Lidl do this as I can't remember seeing any in there on my last visit.

Weather here changeable from day to day, today dry and bright, but with a chill in the air early morning and late afternoon.

Hi all, Gardeners World is on at the moment on Blighty (Virgin channel 206). It's showing back to back episodes until 1.00am. I wish they'd show more about veg growing though. The best programme I ever watched for veg growing was a programme called "Veg Out". I found it funny and informative too and it inspired me to think about using my garden more.

As you all know, I'm still at the thinking stage! lol

Hope all are well. I've got a few pages to read to catch up again so maypost again shortly.

OK caught up now. LIR hope your event goes well tomorrow. (Whatever it is).

SoupD, sorry to hear you lost your job, I hope you find another one soon. You sound like you've been really busy with all your fruit trees/bushes etc. I hope you enjoy the fruits of your labour and manage to get enough to barter with others for stuff you haven't managed to grow.

Same goes to everyone else who's been busy on their lots.

I love the thought of being able to grow stuff in abundance and swapping it for stuff I haven't grown (says she who gets scared even looking at the garden from the window)! A friend has chickens so one day I hope to be able to give her some food produce in exchange for eggs (although I'm sure she once said that she usually gives them away!). I recently bought 6 off her for £1 - all the proceeds were going to charity, can't remember which one.

I met my neighbour the other day and she mentioned about getting back into my garden. That's good because I thought she'd had second thoughts and decided not to bother any more. You would think that would spur me on to get out there. Sometimes I think I could do with some therapy!

Oh well, I'm tired. I don't think I'll be up till 1.00am watching this Gardeners World programme. Oh and I forgot to mention, it's a series from 2004! I wondered why when the guy said last year he went to visit such and such, it showed film from 2003! I guess growing spuds is growing spuds no matter what year it is hey?

    Feel the same way

Well done to all who've got something to show for their efforts!

Spent an hour or two making posters for the plants for the car boot, put extra lagging on the HW tank and..errrr.. thats it :o
