We used to have a rescued Toggenburg goat she had a lovely temperament as I recall, but was very strong, so if she wanted to go somewhere she went there.
Hated the rain though (not sure if this is the same for all goats). I quite fancy getting a couple of Kune Kune pigs as I believe they graze rather than root things up too much. Just hoping they might keep the grass in the paddock in check if we rotate them with temp. fencing.
Need to finalise seed order, as I've now done a list of what I already have and where the gaps are.
Need to break it to OH that we need to visit garden centre to lay in the necessary supplies before sowing.0 -
My friend's wife keeps two Kune Kune pigs. I don't know how true this is, but he says they're a 'waste of space' and only good for making sausages.
Not that it matters in relation to the two in question, since they will never visit the abbatoir! :rotfl:0 -
They don't nuzzle stuff up but there are other grass options too....like geese...thinkingabout Christmas. I must be hungry tonight!0

Hmmmmm hadn't thought of geese - not sure how the dogs would handle them really as our lad Rudy sees any bird as a potential playmate (or dinner as he's part Akita).
Wouldn't want to eat them anyway as I'm vegetarian, so would be strictly for grazing - do geese muck up grassland as much as ducks? They're one animal about which I know very little, so will do some reading up before reaching a decision.
Hens are being progressed, have e-mailed the hen rescue people to ask about ex battery hens, and may resurrect the incubator and check wiring etc. and see if I can get some Buff hatching eggs.0 -
Evening! Random question when you are planting seedlings in trays how many spares do you plant? Also for freezable crops do you just plant them all at once or succession sow?Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

And to help keep the brambly bits down as we get them chopped.....
edit: you just know they are gonna get names and be pets. Still the chooks tasted good.
I am still reading every day chaps, just not feeling inclined to post at the momentMaking magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

Only if we end up with excess boys. And eat the eggs. (Not planning to breed any...). For us the geese are going to be guards and dog training exercise....
(but as a general rule I'd rather eat stuff I know has had a good life that has been eaten in a way that makes me realise the true cost of it and that is going to be well used up than something mass reared in an unfulfilled life and killed in a mass production unit, unappreciated as itself)
soup dragon...this year my dad undid years of hard work with my sighthounds.....and now its a nightmare...I can no longer have the dogs in the yard with me as they just can't be trusted. Its a PITA. A dog my parents sold once killed a pig.... Horrific.0 -

I don't think there's an easy answer to these questions. Maybe 20% more for the seedlings, but I'd give away any spares.
As for freezing crops... Again, it would be different for, say, tomatoes and peas, so there's no hard & fast rules.0
