RAS, most of the way through Meat- a benign extravagance, Fairlie certainly doesnt mind slaughtering a few sacred cows! Its fairly heavy stuff, so it looks as if it will need a second read at least.
I cant think of many other people who have the independence of mind or the breadth of knowledge and experience to take on so many people with "vested interests" in one book.
Certainly not easy reading, given the density and range of material. Skip read large chunks, then started at the beginning a few chapters at a time and need to re-read it again to get it all.
Given that I would normally read a standard paperback in a few hours and something like a Bragg novel or Waterland in 6-8 hours, it takes some effort.
That bit about the 10000 gallons of water per pound of meat (or whatever the measure is) and the reality of Bramble's water content is classic, IMO.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
what dimensions for rails are you looking for ????
type, height, length etc
could it be wrought iron or solid old fashioned type??
p.s. i meant the dodgy blokes might think scrap...not me ! theyve been there since 1880s and apparantly came from scisilly [cant spell it!] going to pass on reg no tmorow to police just incase...
I think scrap yards would be wary of them...they are too lovely...getting caught with hot goods etc? but maybe not. Maybe they get ''processed'' first.
Not sure what we are after exactly...but would need two sets of double gates (and probably the fencing would only be that length again...at most double....depending where we end it). Its a style decision not one of practicality...so I'm probably going to find I have to pass on it if unaffordable. Its certainly going to be more than post and rail for the same length
I have been ploughing through reclamation sites today in hope.....
edit...aha...with you now alfie. Have you padlocked hinge sides? Won't stop them but will slow them down....0 -
Alfie - A relative used to work in a famous graveyard in London & happened to come across an antique reclamation yard that had photos of stone angels, marble slabs grave stuff! There were numbers next to the photos. This person knew the numbers - they were the actual grave numbers that the cheeky chuggers were using as index numbers. They were attempting to punt the stuff before they'd actually nicked it. I'd rig up some security lights and a web cam - can't be too careful.
The Meat book - Is it all how much grain it takes to feed an animal sort of argument?
It's blowing an absolute gale out there - the straps that we have holding the caravan down are slapping the sides of the caravan - It's like a form of torture - we had this before & us AND the cats slept (or rather attempted to) in the car.0 -

just one problem with that idea....NO POWER :rotfl:
good thing is my little jacks would hear a pin drop here at night.

That's good. The machinery (digger and something else) arrived, got in and started digging for half an hour before I heard it today. That gave me a shock...made me feel quite vulnerable actually.0 -

choille, theres a bit of that but it's more like looking at agriculture without having to wear vested interest lenses, especially those worn by large scale agribusiness.
Holds up a mirror to lots of unsustainable agricultural practices, and also some "ethical" consumer choices.0 -
Alfie - meant to say, that's some gates. Lovely. Sorry forgot you didn't have power.
LIR - Does the book slag off big farmers, or just meat producers in general? It sounds heavy going. I've got to the bit that if I can't get into a book I put it down. I seem to find it really difficult to plod on. Both you & RAS seem to be in agreement with it being a bit draggy?
Well found a box filled with mouldy clothes under the bed - yuck. I've had to chuck a few things, I'll need to wash the rest - the dark colours! I always have a kettle on the stove as it's just a cold tap. In hind sight it would have been better to put in a heater, a water heater - I suppose. Too much steamy water vapour - i suppose.
Wicked weather out there tonight.0 -

Hey, I've changed sex
choille, the book is a well constructed analysis of food production, not just meat. As it is broad ranging, and supports itself with a fair few facts, it isnt a light read but neither is it draggy. One of the things I found fascinating was how the moral high position of Vegans was heavily eroded.
But yes, it does heavily criticize large scale agribusiness0 -

It happens to us with the log deliveries and visits from Farmer Pete, but our neighbour with the horses is with them almost all day, so she's another pair of eyes. The dozy lot in the barn conversions are semi-useful, but I delivered 14 letters about the village hall repairs down there last week......and saw no one!
Damp and drizzling here this morning, but today I'm off-duty outside. Yesterday I finished cutting the leylandii hedges, but now need time to recover.:o
Spent half the night researching something planning-related for my BiL. Even joined another forum, but still drew a blank.:( Luckily, there's someone on this site I can PM.... so I have.0 -
Just had an email that I've breached ebay policy by trying to list a budding knife - Well how was I to know you're not allowed to list knives. So that's me got a strike against me already.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
