Our tiny fire has been and gone. we had to stand there with a bucket each its so windy!
In celebration of choille day and a no event when the hunt went past....in fact....special girl had a blissful day, excited but not over excited....we've decided to go for an early drink tonight in the local0 -
Well I had a fire!
OK it was blowing a gale, getting dark and trying to rain, but the Christmas tree obliged.....so there's one the council won't have to recycle!
Happy Choille Day! May the sunshine in 2011 be as plentiful as the creeping buttercup in our bottom paddock!
(Managed to pop a few sheep into the background too!)0 -

Thanks. Yes, that's the old fencing in the photo in front of the new. We haven't pulled it out yet, as I'm intending to let the sheep into that area shortly, just to trim it back for us. It will be more productive garden..... eventually. There are some more photos over on my Photobucket thing.
We still have the rest of the orchard to re-fence, plus a little bit at the other end, + 50m down by the stream. It's going to be a while yet before its all done. Then there's the hedge-laying.....well, I don't need to tell you, do I!:rotfl:0 -

Happy Choille Day everyone! May the sun shine down on the righteous and us lot too!
I didn't have a fire, although I put my gas fire on.
I'm certainly looking forward to the weather getting better so I can get out into the garden and do something! Not sure exactly what I'll be doing, there's so much to learn. I'm feeling quite clueless but optimistic that this year I will get some produce from my garden with a little (well a lot) of help from my neighbours.

Many thanks all - It's raining buckets here & seems to have been for days. It's really fierce gales too & loads of building paper ripped off the house build & is flapping manically. Didn't light a fire as everything is sodden.
Still haven't seen the sun!
I did have a fire a few days ago - old cardboard boxes & oily paper.
Went to a pals ceilidh last night so have a bit of a thick head today. After weeks of just taking little shuffling steps because of the ice to doing a mental sort of strip the willow reel thing - I feel every muscle this morning! The roads are now clear everywhere but weirdly some of the lochs are still frozen as is the dam at Glascarrnoch. Seems that many had burst pipes - so we were lucky in avoiding that this year - so far. I say so far as I don't think the Winter is over.
Yesterday was so driech we went for a run & eneded up at a very nice, but quite expensive garden centre. I bought nothing but it was really good to have snoop around at their trees. They have some beaties but £55 for an apple tree is beyond me. I did buy a Monkey Puzzle from there last year. I could spend a fortune there if I had it as their stuff is really healthy looking & they do get in unusual stuff.
Seeds potatos were 20p each. I didn't bother as it's still a bit early even for earlies.
Well, some hearty news on the window front. A subject that OH has avoided as we were dreading the reality of the cost - as we are hoping to have some large ones. He phoned a companythat will do them trade & the prices are much less than we thought as we will need them made to our sizes & shapes all in hard wood. So that has bucked us up no end as it seems manageable without getting into debt.
Thanks for all the good wishes & cheer & fires lit. I do feel bucked up.0 -
does anyone know why chickens/bantams suddenly go lame and appear not to be able to walk??!! i have a large hen [rescued from someone else] who has a real job to bear weight and walk. NOW i have aquired a little dutch bantam [size of a dove] with the same problem i thought it may have been due to overpassionate advances by the males but neither are showing signs of recovering ??
the legs appear to not respond to touching etc
never encountered LASTING lameness like this before0 -
I have a very elderly hen who was run over by a car. I took her on about 6 years ago & she does appear to have become even more lame - this Winter has been cruel & poor Mrs Hopperty spent a lot of time in her house, so now it's thawed she is getting around, but is really swinging along. It is as if she is even stiffer - which she will be, as we are too - well I am after a period of cold weather & inactivety. I think that bananna skins & bannanas help a little if it is general stiffness. I can't think what else would help - maybe willow leaves, but don't know if they would take them.
Some cockerels are a bit heavy & really can be a bit rough!
Could it be strains? I have had that in ducks that would jump & land badly & what I would do is to confine them so they couldn't walk for a few days until they had healed a bit.0 -
