I have just looked out the window and I have never seen frost like it, the whole world it completely white, I am very worried about travelling to work and I am having real difficulties keeping the rabbits water liquid, it keeps freezing so quickly!

Nice crisp morning again. Looking at the forecasts and trying to get ready for another snowfall, need to buy in some layers pellets and the usual suspects (milk etc). E-mailed the council to refill the grit box, but also plan to speak to neighbours and see if we can all get a bag of rock salt and clear our (hilly!) road after it snows. Otherwise its strictly 4x4 and we've got DD2 + family arriving at the weekend.

We got the oil delivery last week so thats the tank full and enough logs for another 6 weeks in the garage. If we ordered oil now for crimbo delivery it would be 90p per litre, easily the highest price I've known . Mind, logs now selling locally at £100 per cubic metre :(
We live in a 70s house that had 17 single glazed windows, and rubbish insulation. Over the years we've gradually improved the heat retention thru installing double glazing and insulation and it's made a huge difference. Without it we probably couldnt afford to heat the house now.

CTC, Smallholders show at Builth Wells? Sounds good, might even bring DW :) (though I'd be the most pretend smallholder there!).

Poo, if you get fed up with clingfilm try the cheapo window film, its easier to handle and comes with double sided tape. After a session with the hairdryer it looks pretty good too

Tomorrow is the day for Supper and Supper (this years boy chicks) to go to the hen coop in the sky. Or it might be. I can't catch the blighters, they are on a rafter now....

Grrrrr. Its a pain. I guess I'll have to go out very early and turn lights on and try and get them down eating off the floor. They are such handsome boys I was half tempted to keep one back for breeding with but they are big and feisty and starting to get aggro now, so time to go before they do each other any damage.

I would really like a partridge cochin rooster though....:o

We're also having roast cockerel for tea, seem to be over supplied with Orpington cockerels. The last one did 4 days big helpings.

It's been a low cloud, very mild day. We're still trying to catch up with stuff from the last freeze up & the next one's forecast for Thursday so we'll get out tomorrow & then hole up again.

Went down to the shore for mussels but the tide was in - Doh! Beautiful silver, mirror of Loch with strings of ghostly clouds along the mountains but my camera batteries were dead.

Sorry to hear of your woes Poo - Hope things pick up for you soon.

Know the feeling. Saw our maran with a bald spot on lower back (prob from pecking) so decided to put some anti pecking spray on her. Trouble is she just wont be caught or cornered so, nothing having worked, tried to spray her when she went to eat some greens. That's when I found out sprayer was faulty and ended up with hand covered in gooey, sticky foul smelling stuff that wont wash off and stinks to high heaven. Hens 1, Keeper 0
  • I have visons of the film chicken run.......lol..

the thing if you are going to keep cockerels you might as well keep pure breeds, as at least you know you can try and sell the surplus cockeral first, plus you can sell the fertile eggs at farm auctions or on ebay..

well went Asda today, to try and do a big hop, a mixture of essentials and christmas stuff, came home and they all just muched their way through some of the christmas stuff.... thats teenage kids for you, ooo ye and a hubby to match...lol..

its def getting colder here, and they have forcasted a risk of snow for us on thursday.....

but at least it is not as bad as poland...I have a delivery coming from there, and it is snowing, and is -25:eek: i am sure that will enough to make anyone a bit chilly...lol...and it should be here on thursday....we'll see

Been there, done that, though in my case it was just incompetence.:o

Jerusalem artichokes.....Hmmm. Interesting side effects, but I like them. Made a good soup with ours last winter. Also gave loads to the restaurant + rhubarb too, but no reciprocation, so may try somewhere else. The farm shop has re-opened under new management, so maybe a casual visit there next. ;)

Speaking of shops, on leaving the new village PO today, I noticed there was a 'To Let' sign on their fence. They have been open about 5 weeks, and the PO bit only a week, so I wonder what the heck is going on. confused-smiley-013.gif

Sorry you are cold Poo. According to a local who once lived here, our bungalow was originally cold, but that was before all the loft & cavity insulation and new double glazing, not to mention dumping a big Aga in the middle. However it is a a house of doors, and there are six ways to get outside, and that's not counting the garage! That is one reason why we need to change it.

I was never a biker, though I did the Mod thing and somehow survived horrendous crashes and general mayhem. At college, I had a Honda 50, but after coming off it 4 times, crocking-up both knees, I realised nothing had changed and gave it up. Some of us are not meant to go on 2 wheels.:(

Funny, you should be talking culling lir. I had a word with our Welsummers the other day saying 'There's no such thing as a free lunch, ladies. Make sure you cooperate, or you might soon be lunch!'
The stern talking-to seems to have got results. Today, a nice brown egg was waiting for me, larger than any we've had so far from the others.:)
