All the lambs off today & sheep moved back off the hill & it's poured like it was going out of fashion.
A mini water spout appeared next door in the veg garden which has been awash with water - I think it was a mouse hole that was filling with water & spouting out of - weird to see.
Parts of our road have collapsed with the water washing down. Last night was unbelievably noisy & the wind got up to scary levels. I don't like the wind.
Yesterday a neighbour from a mile away came round with a list - all his livestock for sale. His wife has up & left & it's all to be got rid of. He came up here a few years back & a lot of his sheep are very elderly & would be best putting away - but he won't hear of it. I don't think he's going to get many takers. I have said I'll take some of his poultry, but I have had to put away some of my old ewes so I'm hardly likely to take on their's.
It's all a bit of a tangled mess as they have so many animals. He wants them to go where they will get loads of cuddles, but realistically that aint gonna happen............0 -

im going to worry now!! i am too soft i know....0 -
There are so many it would swamp them. Some of the animals will need, do need a lot of attention & there are welfare issues I think - by the sound of it. It's all very sad but needs some unemotional common sense & I don't think that is happening at the moment.0

Evening both/all,
Alfie, thanks for that advice about the bubble wrap, I've kind of decided to go with the cv insulation over the bubble wrap anyway.
Choille, sorry to hear of the wayward weather up there and your neighbours troubles too. I hope all the animals find nice homes.
I had butternut squash tonight for the first time ever! I liked it and have kept the seeds. I'm going to check out a website I found once that explained how to prepare tomato seeds to see if they do a "how to" for butternut squash seeds too. Failing that, I'll have to have a look on Youtube. YT is fab for finding out how to do stuff.
See you all later,

Back about 6 pages ago I said this:
MVF are pretty good for most basics, and if you are a member, there's discount too. I'm probably biased, they began in my home town and I use that town's branch now, though the modern site was a field when I was young.
I went for a quick walk near there last week, when I was supposed to be shopping for nails, staples and hinges. I wanted to have a look at the places where I fished as a youngster, but it had all been altered by the building of the North Devon Link Road. There was a huge underpass for the river and the footpath, all covered in grafitti.:(
However, just down from that part was the pool where I first caught a couple of trout..... becoming 'hooked' myself. That was still the same. Over 50 years, eh? Where did that go?
sheesh, sorry for not paying attention. Please do let me know, I will raise chasing it at our next in house financial meeting (conducted in the car on dh's way home from the station on Friday evening:rotfl:)0 -

I grew up in an old (renovated, I think that makes a big difference) cottage, 2 to 3 foot thick walls, a large woodburner and tiny double glazed windows, meant we had very snug winters.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Unless the woodburner is on, the max the temps go to is 17 degrees and only then when we settle down for the evening. I do like to keep it at 16 degrees as I have a 1 year old, any colder and it gets a little cold for him.

CAn I join the cold house party...as a part timer? The ''new'' part of our pile is 1740s. The subsidence has left cracks that the wind whistles through. Some of the glass in the windows is cracked too. BUT get it warm and it hangs onto the luke warmth for a while despite all the faults. The chimney which passes the surveyor didn't pass the chimney sweep, and he would neither sweep it nor sign it off, but I did risk using it the other day...and there were no problems...it drew, upstairs didn't smell of smoke and we had no chimney fire. I'm going to proceed with extreme caution. The boiler, which we believed to be useless has been coaxed into life and we can get rads on in most of the house. The bathroom gets positively toasty, but our bedroom nd the hall way the rads won't work at all. Which is fine because I like a literally icey bedroom, and think heating the hall is a bit spendthrift. We don't like to use central heating, but now the wood burner is a tentative no -go an the draughts get so bad I'm really grateful for it. The problem is...you turn it on and its hard to turn it off, so resisting as much s possible.
I m convinced nothing can be as bad as the winter we spent in Milan, which is not far off the foot of the alps, with no roof.
FWIW, pig lamps make good stop gaps, underneath the light gets warm, but of course the rest of the home feels colder by comparison.0 -
Eh, when I was a lad, things were hard then......
But now I'm happy to have the lounge at 20/21C when I settle down for the night. With DW still not moving around that much, the woodburner is lit in the morning and kept going until bedtime.
Not sure we've totally recovered emotionally from having the ground floor of the house ripped up in 2008, we'd just installed the woodburner in July and found out about the longstanding underfloor leak in early August. The burner was on every day from late August to help dry out the subfloor, carpets and that furniture we managed to save. So the burner being on gives a sense of security and comfort0 -
