Dave - your discription of the yurt would-be erectors had me giggling away. Yes - I slow down when the nights draw in. Seem to have just wasted a day supposedly dragging a little wood up. I seem to ache all over.
Thankfully we've never had a hunt here - although I thought they were now illegal? We do however get shooters & also poachers. Not on my ground but you never know!!!
Just read about the biggest deer in the country - well England, being shot by a trophy hunter. It will be inedible at this time of year as they are in rut. Some people should be shot, rather than the animal.0 -
Hi RAS - I've been down the bottom of the crot most of this afternoon. It's totally over run with brambles & bracken, but it's very beautiful & peaceful part of the croft - well even more so than the rest of it!
.. Old caravans would be an answer.
Can you actually get an old caravan down there? Access good enough?
PS added another link to my previous comment on camping sites.
And the new photo on your web-pages is gorgeous. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

im off my soap box now!
p.s. im not against humane culling when PROVED nescesary, just believe all animals have a right to die with as much dignity as possible.0 -

I dithered over letting the chooks out but the master has assured me he'll keep away from us today, so....they are out. The horses don't miss a trick and are already snorting and carrying on. We've moved fields in preparation for this, and the grass is up to their knees in some places, hopefully the longer grass will protect the ground a little.
you dont need me to tell you the result!!
i then stood by my gate as they went past in same outfit with a BAN HUNTING sign....
said INFORMEE nearly fell off her well turned out horse [which apparently you or i could easily afford as they keep telling us its "every ones sport"] when she saw me!!

I too was saddened to hear about the stag. But I heard on the news a little while ago that it was part of the annual cull and that the poor old Emperor was about 12 years old and as he would have worn his teeth down a lot. Also, he wouldn't be able to fight as well as the other young stags and would be cast from the herd and left to die a long, slow lingering death.
I'm not so sure about it all to be honest. I think the media have been fed this "news" to spread about because of negative feelings about the stag shoot.
Choille, I can keep my lounge just about comfortably warm enough and my kitchen when I need to be in there. It means putting heaters on at strategic times and sometimes leaving them on for extended periods. I really don't understand why I feel so cold, I mean, I never remember being so cold before having double glazing! I've also got insulation in the loft unless my ex stole that as well! Actually I wouldn't put it past him having not put any in and just boarded it up. Maybe I should check!! And it's not like I'm getting on (well, I'm in my 40's), I shouldn't be feeling the cold the way I do, not yet anyway!!!!
I really would like to get the cavity wall insulation done, it's only £99 but I just worry about money all the time and feel sure that if I spend it on the cw insulation something else will crop up and I'll regret it. Maybe it's time I bit the bullet and just did it!

All I've heard was a brief snippet on Radio four this morning. even the pro hunting guy thought it was ''regrettable'' which is quite telling.
Problem is, we turned this island into managed land...as we were all saying the other day...
I'm really neither pro nor anti these days...depending on the situation, I'd rather shoot something cleanly shootable than hunt it, I'd rather hunt something than poison it. I know my pair of (obviously not hunting) hounds are quicker killers than I am a good shot these days. Its a difficult subject for a country person whose academic career focused on various aspects of ethics in animal sciences! I've come to live with my inner conflicts.
Hunting is legal without a pack of dogs or hounds. Locally they use two hounds (not a pack) and a bird of prey, and I simply cannot fault how well I have been kept informed of dates that could impact on us and, today at least they kept away from the roads and fields directly around us, as they were asked to today, and they guarantee they will not cross your land should you withhold permission and guarantee they will not hunt in an illegal manner.
re direction of pursuit...well, tbh, they don't know which way they will go only which ways they won't (where they are not allowed to cross). They chase, not dictate where the poor creature runs to. If you have local meets and don't know when then my advice for protecting livestock would be to contact the master (its odd they don't contact anyone who is a local landowner of more than a tiny paddock or two) and say you want to have a hunt card so you can make livestock arrangements. I'd be honest that you are not in favour, but respect that telling local anti protesters dates would lead to a potentially dangerous situation, and not least the hunt will be unwilling to pre warn you in the future.0 -
Poo - You must see if you can get help with getting insulation, if you are in receipt of benefits. Thick curtains are good as is double glazing. Warm slippers & leggings & even a hat indoors are all good, as is a shawl. Maybe you have solid floors?
Re Hunting - If someone is a good clean shot & they are using the animal, or it is vermin (that's contentious!) then I find that okay. It's all this leaping into folks gardens chasing foxes dressed in red that I find a bit weirdy.
The deer looked as healthy as the best of them. When they are bad their antlers switchback - no tines and they straggle backwards. Seen plenty where they are not managed properly. The beast looked magnificent. The guy who shot it paid a premium - he wanted the trophy of its fat antlers. Wrong time to shoot stags - they are now out of season because it's rutting time - when the stags bellow & fight to gain/keep control of a harem. That stag certainly looked well capable of fending off young suitors.
When a stag is in rut because of all the hormones - the meat will taste inedible - incredibly strong - like if you were to eat a ram that was in season - you just don't - ( or you curry it!)0 -
