Can't negotiate on the beach, I'm afraid. We can walk to the Peak District from where we live, gorgeous countryside but obviously very inland, so there's no point in moving if we can't get the coastal aspect really. (having said that, we can't afford that amount of land round here - it'd be twice as much!)

Maybe we need to explore what we can afford in the south west. I'd just assumed it'd be way out of our price range.

4 miles from Aberaeron, 8 miles from sandy beach (but I prefer Llangrannog, a bit further away), Vale of Aeron Inn down the road , primary school and Llanerchaeron Estate close by

    No, I'm not moving!

I think the South West is going to be tough within your budget, rozee. I know we're in glorious Devon and paid well under £300k, but our purchase was a panic sale on an agriculturally-tied property at the very bottom of the last property crash, all of which helped keep the price down.... and we're still nowhere near a beach! A close-to-coast property like ours, without the ag-tie, would be in excess of £400k, except, perhaps, in some of the less appealing parts of Cornwall.

I still think your best bet would be West Wales, though if it were me I'd not limit myself to the Cardigan area, nice as it is. I know Haverfordwest are and Pembroke are less attractive , but the country and coast around both is still appealing. Narberth is much nicer than either of those and not that long a run from Amroth, Saundersfoot and Tenby, which are more holiday centres. Occasionally, places come up in villages between Narberth or Haverfordwest and the coast too. In general, Pembrokeshire south of the A40 is very English.

So far as sandy beaches are concerned, you won't find one much larger than Pendine, south of St Clears, and there are good estuarine villages like Laugharne, Llansteffan and Ferryside south west of Carmarthen. There's also sand and a Country Park at Pembrey, west of Llanelli, where there's a fair amount of cheaper landed property, but cheap is always for a reason! Not my favourite area....indeed we had a nickname for it, too rude to put here!

Hope that helps a bit, and I'd be delighted to be proved wrong about Devon & Cornwall.:)

RAS - Feel really inspired by your link. I've been chewing over all sorts of holiday let stuff for a while, but money has been the problem & time, so this type of thing seems possible, doable.

I think as I am outdoors & it's been nice being down the bottom today and imagining it all cleaned up of bracken & brambles. It's pretty level - unlike a lot of the other ground. Definately a nice plot to ruminate on over the dark nights. Dark at 6pm tonight - yikes.

rhiwfield - I have been lazy. The weather hasn't been really inspiring until the last few days. I seem to get as if I've hit a wall - so not terribly productive - although bramble crumble for afters tonight & I've then to sieve the elderberry wine into a demi-john - yipee for free fruit. Good sat next to the stove & know that the wood that's heating us & boiling the kettle I dragged up the croft & murdered it myself.

Lostinrates - I think I'll take advantage of neighbours kind offer & take myself up there this evening for a shower. It is so much easier than boiling kettles. Having long hair is a pain to wash in a bowl here - but usually that's what I do , but will spoil myself tonight. I haven't been as productive as I should of been for a while. I think you do just get worn down - well I have this last wee while. I do slump when Summer ends - although everything is looking pretty wonderful. All the trees are changing colour & with the snow on the tops it does look gorgeous.
We do live in a lovely island really - such variety.

Very annoyed for you on the driftwood thief. It's not fair when someone else nicks it - same with brambles, elderberries - whatever.

Rozepozzee - Yurts are made from felt - went to a felting class in the Spring & was gobsmacked to learn that. I think they use yak fleece rather than sheep's wool though. They must be heavy. I loked at the gallery & all the liks for the campsite - I'm very impressed.

    No, I'm not moving!

That one's on the main Lampeter Aberaeron road, which is why it hasn't sold, but it is great value now, down from £325k about a year ago...and they might well take an offer!

Agree, great area. Nearest really sandy beach is Cei-Bach near New Quay, but Aberaeron has Georgian class and the Aeron valley area is fabulous. :T

I guess living by the sea as a kid cured me of beach lust. sand always everywhere, cars rusting...not for me!

Choille I take issue with you describing yourself as useless and pathetic: I am very inspired by you and its bound to feel a bit grim going into winter: its not pathetic to ant to move things forward, and doing what you do without the benefit of a warm shower or bath at the end of the day to be is so far opposite to useless you can't imagine how you awe me!

If I could thank this post a million times I would! I certainly second what LIR says here. My house is very cold (I have to sleep on the settee in the lounge as it's so cold in here) and I am dreading the winter ahead. But at least I can have a hot shower at the end of the day!

Poo - I always lived in very cold cottages.

A woodburner is great if you own the property & have access to free/cheap wood. I never minded sleeping in a cold room - used to wake up with ice in my hair - coz used to have a bath last thing & sleep with a window open so the cats could come & go, but don't think I could do that now.

Will you be able to get your house warmer cheaply?

No, that's not laziness, it's the time of year. I think we all slow down around now, especially as the nights draw in. Time to recharge the batteries and plot for next year.....

To illustrate, I spent all of yesterday on a '2 hour job,' plumbing-in a sheep trough and making an extra tap outlet. Everything seemed to be taking an age and, although I cleaned-up all the old fittings I located on a dead run of pipe, one dodgy washer meant it was almost dark before the whole thing was drip-free. Probably saved £20- £30 by reusing old fittings, but lost hours making them work.

Oh, and I looked at a roof which is in urgent need of tin....and I decided it wasn't that urgent...:rotfl:

my chooks at my house have permenant access to thier enclosure from their shed. not shut in. i let them out of enclosure daily . it was just weird there WAS eggs and now theres NONE ?? this is a selection of big chooks and bantams.
p.s. i have a pair of ducks ,...never had so much as ONE egg!! also "goose goggins" my sebastipol goose who only chases my terrier !
I think your problem with both, is that are laying elsewhere.
Ducks especially lay where ever they want, mine used to change laying places every week or so. Once I couldn't find them anywhere, I watched them for ages and nothing, so I set up a camera and played it fast forward to find out where they went. Found a huge clutch in the end.
