Dave, you have a lovely lot of space, which kinda depresses me in a way. I'm about to turn my front garden into a massive bed for veg, fed up with the wasted space, the village "must look good all the time, we must win the best flowered village trophy people, can go and swivel"
Rhiwfeild, I lied, I have a 10x6 greenhouse, not a 8x6. Got mixed up, sorry!Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

i have got loads of broad bean plants to sell, i dont know what is happening with my runner bean plants this year... they just look.... well.... sick, so i think i will just plant them all up where i can find space...( even on the factory fence just across the way from the front of the house:rotfl: and see if they recover....cant wait to see the looks on next doors faces when they see me getting rid of hte brambles, and planting runner beans.... they will def think i have lost hte plot....hahahahahaWork to live= not live to work0 -

Lotus-eater....
i wouldnt give two hoots about planting veg in the front garden...
i think you might get the odd wired look, but i bet it will be a great talking point for the older generation, who could remember back to WWII where every bit of space was used to grow veg...You could even put some flowers in between,
this might even be good for the village garden in bloom type thing..... as growing fruit and veg is very popular now, so you could show that growing veg can make a pretty garden too.Work to live= not live to work0 -
Wow Dave! You have been working hard!
It's been too hot for me to be outside, so have been potting up sweetcorn in the living room at the house the last few days.
We're off to see the new Grandkids at lunch time today. They'll be 2 weeks old tomorrow. :j Twin boys - Ben and Alex. So not much time for gardening today, though we'll prob do some at the DD's house while we're there - don't think they have much time for gardening at present!
We got the first costings for the remedial work on the house this week. (covers ears and closes eyes and chants Ning ning ning I don't wanna know ning ning ning this is scary)
Potatoes are coming through nicely, including a row that I forgot we planted! (rolls eyes)
Was going to get beans and mange tout out, but I gather it may turn cold from Tuesday night so will either have to pot into something bigger or just hope the weather warms up by next weekend and put them out then.
Courgettes and patty pan squash are growing away like fury, will begin to harden them off I think, but bring them in overnight.
Sorry, I'm rambling! :rotfl: Better get going as we have to collect plants from the house on our way to DD's place.0 -
I've had veg in the front garden for the last few years, just now the whole lot is going to be dug up.
I've got stuff all over the place
when the judge comes round for the show, I'm like..... I've got this over here, this over here, oh yes, this stuck in here, a bed here, one over there, one stuck behind this.....
I love the old Dig for Victory, every bit must be dug up thing, in fact I'm about to buy a reproduction WW2 poster I saw on tv the other day, for my lounge

I wouldn't let that stop you either - besides with some clever planting you can create a brilliant show for your front with veg plants, as some are really attractive as well as edible.0 -
congrats ukmaggie:T twin boys... now they are going to be a handfull....its a lovely idea to give a helping hand in the garden for them, as i should imagine the garden is going to be the last thing on their minds...
Lotus-eater... i love the whole WWII ethos too, with the growing of food, make do and mend....etc... but in reality...my generation and younger will never know the truth about living in at this time.... the fear and the true meaning of not having any food etc...
I find there is a good market for 1940's things on ebay, and in general, especially the vintage wrap around aprons, that is very iconic of the 40's, sold a few over the last few weeks, got some finishing on ebay tonight, also the 1940's material goes really well.
dont know how long i am going to be able to stick it in the garden today, just popped out there now to see waht jobs i am going to do today, and flip its 'SCOURCHIO'Work to live= not live to work0 -
I don't think I'm that bothered about making it good looking, I have a flower bed in the very front of the front garden, which absolves me from any other aesthetic planting in my mind.SallyForth wrote: »I wouldn't let that stop you either - besides with some clever planting you can create a brilliant show for your front with veg plants, as some are really attractive as well as edible.
I'm not going to tell you what I'm doing this year in the front garden, because anyone out there who lives near me would know exactly who I am, but lets put it this way.... I'm not your average next door neighbour.

CTC, I will come back later and say a bit more....I have one of the local lads on my tail who wants to drive the dumper for me, so no slacking just now, I'm afraid!0
