Our ISA rates are rubbish and its about time we shopped around. With DW serving out her redundancy notice (and laid up after an operation with another to follow in 3 months) we've been a bit cautious about locking in to fixed term rates until we could see what we needed to live on short and long term. The best thing we did with a few thou' was to get about 12% after tax return on the solar pv but a 25 year fix is a bit extreme!! The main pension pot is cash linked so thats lost ground to inflation, but it could have been in equities
I think I mentioned that Santander had quietly dropped my ISA to 0.1%. I closed my current account, moved my ISA and shifted my other savings somewhere else. Since they were good at sharp practice, I also suggested a name-change to Banco de Tesco. Of course, my little protest was nothing, but if more people acted rather than complaining...;)
The way energy costs are likely to go, perhaps the pv panels will have a faster pay-back? If you are in what lostinrates & I call a 'forever home,' the security of an affordable supply is certainly worthwhile.
Although we're on two year fixes, a lot of these allow access with a penalty, so they are good for people like us, with no clear idea of when we'll need the cash. If we get on quickly, we'll lose some interest, but perhaps gain via less inflation, which is the danger if we hang about. OTOH one can only go so fast.......:(
Still haven't uploaded my pictures,:o but there's been a lot going on, including a complaint about our sales activities. That's dealt with, for the moment, and in some ways it's been very helpful, but I could do without the extra hassle just now.
Mama67, sounds like you are doing pretty well with your plot; better than I'm doing with mine, anyway!0 -
Did they complain directly to you? neighbour or competitior? hope everything works out ok..
well yesturday i went to the scrappy and took my alu cans and empty tins ( dog food, beans etc) and got £8:rotfl::money: well its better than a poke in the eye with a stick...lol.. plus it is money i wouldnt have had. so today we are going to have a rummage round and weigh in some of hubby's old car bits.....might as well, as scrap prices are pretty decent at the moment...
My turkeys have started hatching out.... sadly one died while hatching out:(, but the one that has hatched so far is now in the brooder... flip their ugly chicks:rotfl:
plus just went to leave the chickens and ducks out, and one of my ducks have gone broody, so that will be nice to watch....Work to live= not live to work0 -
cooltrikerchick, I have never thought of scrapping my cans...do you do this just at a normal scrap metal dealers? what do you put them in? we have loads of scrap metal to deal with at the new place. Most of the fencing is corrugated metal, plus all the milking equipment (very old) I'm hoping the metal value will be something useful.
Had a bit f a grump yesterday after going to the Royal Bath and west show. Its so clear to me why the Royal went and was failing.. £20 for one ticket: pah...by this time next year I might be preared to give it another go, but I get cross and upset: in my relatively short life time shows have changed so much. Now I don't compete what they offer me is less and less. And the way they are, nothing tempts me to compete again!

Hi, yes i phone my local scrap dealers when i got a load to see what they are paying for each type of metal...and if i think the prices sound good ( scrap metal can go up and down) i take my cans in...
ok... dont get me wrong.. i do save them up over a matter of months, and have a load.....i think alu cans were £450 a ton, and steel cans/tins were £80 per ton...i did get a higher quote per ton from somewhere else, but by the time i paid the fuel cost to get there it wasnt worth going for the higher price place..
I just put my cans in black bags or empty coal bags etc...and put them in an outhouse until i think i got enough...
with your other metal items in your new place i would check out what you have got first, as if you have got old equipment it might be worth more if you put it into a local farm auction...especially old milk churns as they seem to bring a high price... for decoration items etc...
All i can say is take the obvious carp to the scappy, dont be too hasty to get rid of everything...first off.....

Neighbour(s). I won't say much on here, except it will be OK. We have other nice neighbours and the law on our side. It's not the first time, apparently....;)0 -

what do you show?
Thanks! I'm so going to do this now! The milk stuff is not churns or urns, but stalls, feeders, chutes etc. Most of it held together with baler twine and the actuall milking equipment is seriously, seriously out of date an in poor repair.
I used to show horses. I've shown ''real'' animals a few times...cows and sheep, for friends though. I don't fancy showing my poultry, its all too much effort for me and stress for them. I love watching pig classes...something I don't ever fancy doing myself! My dad and husband are both quite keen for me to run a few sheep, I'm not so fussed, not that keen on sheep as people, but one of my jobs yesterday was to see if any sheep breeds stuck a chord with me. I actually looked at my savings on online banking this morning, and realised the rate had dropped from 3.25% to 1% in April. So I am doing the forms this afternoon to open a new one and get the high rate again. Must find a spot for the lump sum too (might withdraw that and put it elsewhere). But there is €5k there now. And I am just after shocking myself checking the other savings account details - €13.6k!! I though I had about €3k in there!! Shows what happens when you forget about the salary sacrifice money! I was going to reduce it when we got paycuts a while ago, bgut as we're still doing OK, I will let it ride a while longer and build up as much as possible.
But I am hearing lots of warnings recently, especially on radio 4, about "young people" going to the land in recent years (ages 30s and 40s), that it's not a realistic proposition until near retirement age?!
Anyway, in the meantime, we will keep growing the veggies on the plot, I will keep reading lots of books and trying to build up the funds quietly, and see what options there are for sites around (not many, even in the current climate).GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897
GC 2011:Overall Target: €6,000/ €5,442 by October
Back on the wagon again in 2014
Apr €587.82/€550 May €453.31 /€5500 -

where do you live? as i see you are doing everything in euros
at the moment the lloyds tsb advantage account is offering 4% for balances between 5 - 7k£ but you need to put in 1k£ a month, so what i have done is set up a standing order d/d ? so i got 1k going out into a halifax account, then that 1k goes from the halifax into a bank of scotland account, and then it goes back into the lloyds account. so its the same 1k doing the rounds so to speak. this will keep you within the terms an conditions.
why i put the money into the Halifax and the bank of scotland, is that they both have accounts that give you £5 a month if you put 1k£ into it every month..;):D. so i get £10 a month for just transfering money in and out of the accounts.....simples:money:
here are the links for lloyds and the Halifax....
