HAPPY BIRTHDAY Flower!!
TooChoosey: How was Camarthen?? Hope you didnt have the same snow and cold that I did!!!
Dustykitten: Thanks for your PM. I will come back to you, just been one of those weekends. Re the homework thing. Shocking I know, but my lifestyle doesnt allow for my son to be able to do a great deal of homework. I work all day, get home at 6, by the time we eat and finish dinner its about 6.30pm - 7.00pm. By that time, its bath/bed time and we read a chapter of a book (at the minute its Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). There is no way that at that time of night, I could get my son to sit down and write about what he liked/disliked about the book etc. He is given spellings, which we do at the weekend and I save all birthday cards etc, for the coming week for at the weekend and he will sit down and write them (i.e. doesnt them apprear as homework.) I have discussed this at length with his school and they have told me that as long as we are doing the reading and the spellings, thats enough. If he is too tired to then write about the reading, then not to force the issue, as then it becomes a problem..... speaking of which....
FAO of all Teachers!!! My son is having problem with his math - simple sums which he can recite are fine, but if you ask him to work something out he doesnt seem to be able to do this. For example, he can count in 5's so knows that 20+5=25 but if you ask him what 21+5 is, he doesnt know. Where can i buy work books etc online, or can you suggest a good website which would have printables etc which we could work on at home?
Anyway best of luck to all you peeps Flying during the day......wishing I could be with you but am going to work on my To-Do's and meal planner instead hopefully!!Sometimes lurking, sometimes posting, but always flying

Are you particularly tall/short? My granny used to have a fitted kitchen built to scale for her (she is tiny!) in her old house, and no-one else could wash up without getting backache.Isabella Molly born 14th January 2009

That made me chuckle my kids are always telling me what a bad mother I am:rotfl: :rotfl:
Just having lunch - tomato and spinach soup and then I'll mop the floor before I go out.
I need to sort out Nan's kettle. She needs a new one as the current one (only 14 months old) is tripping her electrics. She rang earlier to say she'd forgot to get the carer to put more water in the old kettle so could I go over. I was kind but firm and said no I could not. I cannot be at her beck and call and meals on wheels will be in at lunch time who can help. I am sure it is company that she wants most and I will go in at some point today but I'm at my most productive in the mornings. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -

It is my least favourite task after cleaning the shower - I hate doing that more. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -

ETA: Spoke to DH a few mins ago. He has suddenly decided he wants to buy a chainsaw. He does use them at work, but usually borrows his dad's one. He says its becoming a pain to have to keep borrowing it. I can see that. However, they cost £400! He is following one on ebay which is starting at £5 and ends tonight. I've got nothing against him buying one, but he did say he was going to save up for one. I would rather spend the money on getting our debts down, as you can see from my sig we aren't doing very well.
If he doesn't get the bargain one tonight, have you any suggestions on how I can persuade him to wait before getting a normal price one? I have explained that it would be good to get our debts down, as this will decrease our monthly outgoings and then we will have more cash to play with. I kind of feel that while he can keep borrowing one he should. He only uses it once every couple of weeks, if even that much!"Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together."

Jo - I've forgot how old your DS is? I'm not a teacher but I have 3 boys who all learn in quite different ways. For me you example is showing two different skills - learning your times tables and then applying the skills. My elder two have always done the same sum in different ways, one is a natural mathematician, the other is a good mathematician but one who applies the rules he has learnt.
Have you tried using a number square (10x10 squares with the numbers 1-100 in)? Idea is he puts his finger on 21 and then counts on four spaces. Some children are very visual learning so do better when they can see the numbers.
BBC website stage 1 is quite fun but also I find quite abstract, DS3 enjoys it. My maths is a good site my older ones use but I'm not sure if it goes down to younger ones. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
I hate mopping the floor too. It is one of the jobs DH quite likes doing, but he didn't get round to it over the weekend, so I'm just going to have to cope. I might wait for bathroom day and do them both together though... will see how we get on this afternoon.
