Apologies if this has already been mentioned on this thread (too lazy to read it all) but there's a book:D called School Dinners by Becky Thorn. It has mysteriously just arrived through my letterbox from Amazon  (oops breaking my new year's resolution already).

It is full of recipes for school dinners from the 1960s and 70s. They include; liver and bacon, rice pudding (always served with stewed prunes in my school), fish and chips, chicken curry, cheese flan, mashed potato served with a scoop, chocolate concrete, chocolate cornflake tart, custard-yellow, mint and pink_pale_ , bananas and custard_pale_ _pale_ , jaffa tart, gypsy tart andspam fritters.

    It's a good read too, she's funny.

Boy, did I loathe the custard:eek: I used adore chocolate concrete and I'm going to make some for my kids pud tonight.

How did it go? Was it like you remembered?

    and marshmallow tart:p

Is that the tart that had a thin layer of red jam, then a layer of pink marshmallow?

I'm dying to find that recipe. The really annoying thing is, when I was about 17, my dad was seeing a lady who was a school dinner cook and she gave me the recipe. Unfortunately, that was nearly 30 years ago and I have long since lost it. :(
  • I remember the mash at my primary school was so much nicer than the mash at secondary school.

    Hi Vanya. :hello:

I remember when potatoes were short (back in the mid 70's) so we were given slices of bread and marg to make up for the lack.

I discovered that greens sandwiches were actually rather nice!:rotfl:

Yes, it was! It's a bit uninteresting as a dessert though -I expect our tastes have become more sophisticated.

I might be able to help. That tart you remember we had at school too in a similar form. It was a pastry case with jam and then on top was a layer of pink goo. This was made by making a red jelly using half the amount of water (half a pint instead of a full pint) and just as it was about to set whisking in an ice cold tim of evaporated milk. This pink fluffy mixture was poured over the cooled jam tart and hey presto pink slice. Ours was often topped off with apple puree too. They called it Dutch apple tart!

Probably needed some mint custard to go with or perhaps it was because it wasn't served by a lady whielding an aluminium fish slice!
